    Hello,

I was a desktop support tech about 5 years ago, since then I have drifted out of IT, and am looking to get back in, at the bottom rung of the ladder if necessary.

I am working through the Sybex Bill Ferguson book, it's 2 years old, and I have a question or 2, hope you don't mind.

Can I still do the exams for XP?
Assuming I can still do the XP exams, which versions of Internet Explorer and Office are the questions targeted at?

I think I'm ready for the 271 exam, might just read through the book one more time and do some more practice tests.
I had imagined doing both exams on the same day, but do you think if I'm ready for the 271 I should just get it out of the way?

    Thanks for reading,

    Steve

Welcome to CF, glad you joined.

Yes you can still do the exams for XP/2003, MS will be discontinuing the 2000 route next year though.

As for IE: It can be any version up to the most current*.
As for Office: Again, can be any version, up to the most current*.

*This does depend on how often and fast updates their exams.

If you feel you are ready for the exam, go for it.

    Good luck.

    -Ken

I have my 271 exam on Wednesday.

I got some Transcender tests last week, did one, and got 78%.
There seemed to be 4 or 5 questions that were nearly identical on it though. Seemed a lot harder than the sybex sample exams and the questions in the MS Press books at the end of the chapters. The questions are very long winded as well.

I did another Transcender test yesterday and got 53%!!!!!!!
Damn that brought me down to earth.

I have just got the MS Press book recently (OK 2 days ago!), not got time to read all of it but it does seem to go a lot more into depth into performance monitoring, and has a great introduction to networking and TCP/IP that I found useful.

I'm scanning through the MS Press book, looking for things not covered in the sybex book, concentrating on them, and doing the end of chapter tests on which I'm averaging 8 or 9 out of 10. Of course it's easier when I've just read the preceding chapter 5 minutes ago!

Everytime I do an exam or a question in a book that I get wrong, I am marking it down, and now have a list of about 20 small topics that I need to firm up my knowledge on.

    Welcome mate!

Personally, I was thinking taking both exams at once, but it's safer to go one at a time (it's a big bite :)
Going for it in 1 week.

All the best and good luck!:)
