I have decided to take a 6 month career break. In this time, I am hoping to get another job (not specifically IT) and study towards some IT certification which if I have to return to my old job will stand me in good stead but also enable me to hopefully shift career some time in the future. I have a reasonable knowledge of PC's and have built my own. I did intend studying towards MCSA in that 6 months. Does anyone think that is achieveable? I have a bit of experience in Network Admin but only what the MOD will teach you (no certs). However, after reading a number of posts on here, it appears that A+ is the best way to start before going towards MCSA/MCSE etc. However, other than an all-in-one study book do I need? Do I, for example need an old PC to pull to bits? This wouldn't be a problem as I could probably lay my hands on a couple. What CD-Roms do I need etc? Cheers for help in advance!

    Hi and welcome!

IMHO A+ is a good starting point - it fills in the inevitable gaps in your knowledge, even if you have been playing with PCs for some time.

If you can afford it - get a second book as well as the Meyers All-in-one. The alternative viewpoint is helpful.

Definitely find some old PCs to hack about. Great practice!

    Harry.

Yeah it's important to begin with A+ before you start the MCSA it'll be helpful to you. Otherwise welcome onboard. 8)

    Welcome to CF!

I think you made a right choice with the A+! :biggrin 6 months for a MCSA is i think a little impossible! That would mean 4 exams in 6 months and unless you a server guru no way!

A+ is going to be upgraded soon so keep it in mind to check comptia's site (here) regularly to see when the update will come through - but i think in six months it will still be okay. A+ all in one is the best book and i think if you can get a pc or two that would be great! Win 98 and win xp should be okay for the OS exam - win xp covers the win 2000 too cause the are alike in the a+!

    Good Luck! :thumbleft

I reckon for the MCSA you need to pace yourself for around one exam every two months. That would be eight months if it all goes to plan, which it usually doesn't :blink

Good luck! and welcome to the forum.
