great site!

i've decided to change careers and am as a way in am looking for 1st line helpdesk roles to get a foot in the door whilst studying for Comp TIA +. Currently going through the catch 22 of not having helpdesk experience but just having a qualification not being enough unless i have some experience. trying to get roles based on years of unofficially helping out colleagues with IT issues and selling my customer service experience as much as poss to get my foot in the door!

this site's been a great help for interview preparation - managed to get my first one tomorrow and am currently swotting up on potential technical questions they may ask. lots of useful info on here so hopefully i can contribute to help others in due course.

webbomonkey, Good luck with the interview. I got my first job on helpdesk by selling the fact I had years of customer service experience too so it can be done. Plus after a few months on first line it opens a whole lot of job prospects. I find a lot of companies appreciate that you were willing to start at service desk, and the experience that gives.

hey all!!

just thought i'd let you know the interview went well & i start next week!!

really chuffed as i don't have IT experience per se (will be trained up but will enrol on the CompTIA A+ later this month so i have a bit of paper to go with it) so sold my customer service skills to them and demonstrated how enthusiastic i am to learn - it seemed to do the trick!

will post some advice on how i found it in the main site but just wanted to say thanks for your kind words of support.

You don't need to "enroll" in anything... just study on your own using a study guide (Meyers A+ All-in-One Exam Guide Sixth Edition and Pyles PC Technician Street Smarts highly recommended). When you're ready, schedule the exams and take them.

thanks for that. i thought i'd be better off taking a part-time course as i thought i'd be more focused on it that way - costs about £600 though so will check out the book & technician street smarts you recommend before parting with my cash!
