It hasn't connected to the router. You need to get it to do that.

WiFi is like that. There are lots of reasons for the connection not to work or to be unreliable. These include interference from other nearby APs, interference from other non-WiFi items, multi-path problems between the AP and the station as other objects are moved etc.

On the last point - it is often useful to move the AP about while testing. This may improve the signal or reliability in the places where you want the stations to be usualy.

If you want reliability use ethernet cable.

    Mark,

XP has ditched "DOS". XP is based on the NT kernel unlike Windows 9x, ME which had DOS running in the background.

If you type VER in the command box it will display the version of Windows you are running.

I think you are being a little pedantic Boyce. Although you are correct, in saying DOS is not running in the background. Actually shelling out to a command prompt hasn't changed much since Windows 95, where you did shell out to a DOS prompt. The command interpreter in Windows 2000 and XP is very DOS like to use, so much so that it might as well be DOS.

True, typing cmd or command (depending on the OS) in the run line brings up the command prompt, that’s all I need to know!

Is there an update for this problem Mark? Have you thrown the laptop out the window and now its sitting in the front garden? :biggrin

    Mark,

Either in the Windows wireless config utility or the one that came iwth the wi-fi card (whichever you are using) there should be an option to automatically connect to the network whenever it's available. Do you have that checked?

To test wi-fi throughtput, I use QCheck . You just install it on two networked machines, run the software on one of them and away you go. It's very simple to use.

    Good luck.

It appears the problem has sorted itself out. After trying the laptop between houses a few times it has not lost its connection and been ok since :D
    Cheers again!

Please start a new thread rather than tack onto a 3 year old one.

    And give us full details.

Saying in effect 'it doesn't work' really gives us no clue. It could be anything.

Kind of unclear - you're better off starting a new topic (This thread started 5 years ago) and explaining in alot more detail of the actual problem, and what it is you're trying to acheive
