My laptops been a bit funny lately. On shutdown an error message used to pop up, something about memory error.I ingnored it, stupidly, said I'd sort it another time.Anyhow, it disappeaered on shutdown the last couple of times so I didnt worry about it.

Then this morning I came to check me emails before going to work and the screen was blue with writing on it.

I should have written some notes but I didnt.I remember it was summit about the primary file table in FAT32 is (some word, think is was summit like fragment, but it wasn';t that summit similar ythough).

Anyway it did something, like redid summit or other and everything was fine (I should have took notes, sorry)

Anyhow I've come to switch me laptop on now and it says

    "Invalid BOOT.INI file
    Booting from C:\windows\"

Then it goes to the next screen where it says

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file"

Please help, I've never had a comp go funny on me, I'm panicking.

I don't think I got a CD with me comp, I think a copy of Win XP is on a separate partition but I hope this hasnt lost me any data.

I also recall when I started windows this morning it actually started ok before the screen went blue with writing on it.Just before it happened there was an error message than said something like a runtime error occured.

I have my mouse config utility start up auto on startup but it didnt appear then blue screen.

    xp pro.

    Only.

I have VMWare viryual machines but they're only virtual.

I installed a new cordless mouse recently but I didnt diasble the laptops built in mouse.i didnt bother because they both worked fine so thought it was ok, .

Maybe the memory error waas a conflict between the two pointing devices????

Thing is, it worked fine for days, so why if it is that would it only happen now

Have you been trying to dual boot intsall the PC? If you can get hold of the install CD for XP, it is XP your running then one fix could be to Boot from your CD start Recovery Console

    This isnt a multiboot system.

I've just found the XP Pro CD-ROM so I'm going to boot with that and then should I reinstall that file that it said was missing.

I dont want ot reinstall the whole thing u see otherwise I'll lose me data if it isnt lost already

I booted from the CD then a blue screen said press F2 to repair, so I did then it said insert the rpair disk into the floppy drive, I dont have a bleepin floppy drive.

So I press escape and now windows is currently setting up loading files,

The options have just come up, I'll press rpair,

    Please advise

    I'm at the recovery console

    It says

    1: D:\WINDOWS

Which Windows installation would you like to log onto
(To cancel, press ENTER)? (here it has a dot form where to start typing)

aNY IDEAS WHAT i SHOULD put there, I think D is my hard drive

    Flex, take your time!

From reading your posts you sound in a rush. When you rush your more likely to make mistakes. So SLOW DOWN.

Is you PC a highstreet retail PC and is the XP CD a recovery CD. Some recovery CD's will wipe your data, but you will be warned about it first. Lets get things in perspective and we might be able to get you up and running again.

OK, ITS A HIGH street laptop, well I ordered it over the net.

It says that the following file is missing or corrupt
    <Windows root>\system32hal.dll

So basically I need to reinstall that but I dont know what that file does.

Maybe the hal means hardware abstraction layer or summit.I hopr it has nothing to do with data.

Ok so I've inserted my XP Pro CD into the cd drive and made the bios so that it boots up from the CD.

It installed some files and now I'm at the recovery console.

Now I need to figure how to use the recovery console so that I can reinstall that file ONLY without overwriting all my data.

PS; Sorry I was a bit stressed, just had a bad day this mornin at work and I'd only just got in so I was a bit ratty.I'm chilled now though

Sounds like your in the repair console, once you've selected the installed windows (no1) then you should have to input you admin details then use the command above to extract the dll from your CD to your HD, remember to adapt the drive letters to suite.

hmmm. it says put in the admin password. As I don't have one to log on to my comp I just pressed enter but it keeps askin for one.

Maybe this was put in by the pperson who originally set it up.

I'm tryin to think if I specified a password when I set up the comp.

It gives me 3 goes at the password before I have to restart.I've put in three passwords I usually use but there plenty more, I'll just have to think

If the system was pre installed, i know when i worked for compaq and people bought our machine pre installed from the likes of dixons and PC World they used to leave the Admin password blank

I can give you some tips on finding out what the password is
