Hi all, my name is Carl and as you have probably guessed I am new to this forum. I have just started my CompTIA A+ course. I have always been interested in computers and enjoy using them, but know absolutley nothing about how they work. So I am starting from a complete novices perspective. I am really looking forward to the challenge though, and any advice on getting started would really be appreciated.
    Thanks

I'd never had my hands inside a computer case before I took my course. After that, I was hopelessly hooked. Glad you found the place. Let us know what we can do to help. :)

Well they say mike meyers is the guru of A+ so you might want to start with his book and it helps alot if you have a comp to work on. Ask all kinds of questions if something stumps you. And welcome to cf!

Hi guys, thanks for replying and for the Mike Meyers info - I will be checking his book out. I bought a new computer a couple of days ago which I am using at the moment, and have kept the old one for practicals for my A+. The computer is fairly old now though (Windows 95), will it still be useful?

    Welcome Carl

The Windows 95 machine will be fine, A+ expects you to know about old bits of kit as well as off the shelf stuff. It may have an older shape of motherboard and no USB support but other than that you would be able to play with most things. The insides of a machine having changed much over the years (there are really only two major system board designs worth learning about for instance) and the operating system side of the course pretty much divides into 9x (95,98,Me) and NT (NT4,2K,XP) families so having one old and one new machine would be very helpful.

Actually, the Windows 95 one will work out well for learning the legacy material. I assume your new computer has a more modern OS on it so the two will be fine. The old one will be good for opening up and tinkering around with which I imagine is your plan.
