Hello to everyone in the CertForums, :D
I stumbled across this place yesterday night when i was doing some reviews through Google on learning at home courses.
I'm Chris, i'm 34 and live in Coventry.I am a CCTV inst eng, have 3 great kids a great wife and a lazy dog.
I have no certs with regards to I.T but i have been building p.c's for friends, family, friends of friends for around 5years now so i have basic p.c skills.
Recently i did however enroll on a home study course with a well known company (not sure if i can mention their name) they sound a little like Hills Brain....
The course was for A+ N+ then CCNA CCNP.
I've now decided to drop out of this course (reasons) and i need to look into other options with regards to getting my A+ and maybe getting myself into the I.T industry as thats what realy interest me.
If anyone here can offer advice with regards to getting your foot on the 1st rung of the ladder in the I.T world then i'd realy appreciate it.
Thx again (sorry to sound like a noob, but i im)

Thx guys for the warm welcome and thx zimbo for the link.
The self study seems like the way forward for me and it was a real pleasure to read because it answered afew of the "how do i" questions that are spinning around inside my fuzzy head :biggrin
How do i go about getting the *equivalent of 500 hours of hands-on experience* for the A+ when i am not in the industry?
Is it through a Lab manual guide (is this a interactive cd/dvd?)
    Thx again.

    Greetings :thumbelft
Comptia give guidelines to how much experience they have based their exam topics and questions on. You can gain valuble experience by breaking and fixing a few computers.
I used an *old banger* that booted Windows 98, 2000 and XP.
    Good luck. :)

    Hi and welcome, Stopi,

The guys here will give you loads of advice on self-study. Did you not get to keep any of the resources, books etc, from when you were with "Hills Brain" - it must have cost you a fair few quid to drop out the course. As far as I'm aware, none of the basic level distance-learning courses don't come in for much less than a couple of grand ??!!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry about the lazy dog but then look at the bright side, you probably don't have to walk it much.:D

    Hi Jakamoko,
I cancelled my agreement within the 21 days cooling off period, so i have very little resources, books to begin with.
My reasons for this are from reading through loads of reviews after enrolling. (alarm bells started to ring in my head)
Note to myself::: Do the reviews before comitting.
I do understand that there is postive and negative reviews to all things, and that there is generaly a higher negative review ratio, but at the end of the day £3700 doesnt come easy to most people, certainly not myself.
So i'd rather put money into something im totaly happy with then only 50/50.
    Thx

You will find that most IT Certifications recommend certain experience levels before they think you would be ready or suitable to study for it.

But in 99% of the cases it's only a recommendation, not a condition. Some of the hands on experience you have working on PC's that you built for others would qualify for part of the 500 hours etc...

Oh and welcome to CF and good luck in whatever path you decide to go down.
