As much as I wanted to like Tolkien, I fell asleep halfway through Fellowship of the Ring. I like a *lot* of Piers' stuff, especially the Incarnations of Immortality series and the Apprentice Adept series.

Fed up about hearing of mr potter, hogwarts witches wizards and how people are 'brave' for queuing for the damn book.

Suppose its a bit of narrow minded attitude on my part, although a few years back I read Pullmans 'Subtle Knife' series of books and thought they were ok. Not really my bag all that sorcery malarkey, the truth be told.

The films are great but I've never read a single Harry Potter book. I think at some point I may try my hand at reading the original first novel. Everyone who has ever read the book of a film always say the book is better. :)

Ok I have 2 kids 16yrs and 13yrs and you think I can escape the Potter thing?

Actually, I've read all the books and enjoyed them for what they are. Also seen all the films (except the latest).

I love Lord of the Rings books and also enjoyed the films and just got the latest offering as sorted by Christopher Tolkein.

Fav fantasy authors are David Eddings and Raymond E Feist

Thanks AJ for you input...Hmmm David Eddings there's another great author:biggrin

Yes the LOTR films were excellent and I was a little surprised Peter Jackson didn't follow it on with the Hobbit?

Also the DVD collection of LOTR stood out of the crowd by releasing extended versions of the films as well as the standard cinema versions.

I read the third book of Harry Potter after watching the the first harry Potter film. Didn't think too much of it until I read the forth book and was blown away by it. Lots of twist and turns in the story. Shame they cut most of this out in the film. But then again if they had of stuck to the book, it would of probably been 5 hours long:biggrin

I know where to go when I want to read fantasy (definitely not Tolkien even though I loved the Lord of the Rings when I was at a secondary school :D ). Likewise, I think Harry Potter is a good piece of children's literature (like Astrid Lindgren's books, for example, or the Moomins). You don't have to be a child to enjoy these books, and the same goes for HP.

And as for ps3... when it has got some more RPGs (or ANY RPGs for that matter), and is at least £200 cheaper, I'll think about it :D

I started reading Gladwell's Tipping Point but stopped after first 20 pages :-). Apparently the only non-fiction books I can read are from IT or linguistics.

At first "Blink" seemed to just be a book describing the process most people call "intuition" but it's getting a tad more involved. Nothing earth shattering but a nice diversion.

Yes: our local 'independent bookshop' closed last month, although I think it was on-line sales particularly, and a Waterstones branch opening nearby, rather than the supermarkets that did for them in the end.

If I'm honest, most of my recent book purchases have been on-line, so it would be hypocritical of me to weep crocodile tears. They had a site that was just too central, so their rent/business rates ran into +£300,000, and an independent can't survive like that. Another independent in a smaller market town nearby is surviving, with much smaller costs and being in a town too small to attract the big players (they don't even have tescos!).

Everyone predicted this would happen when the NBA was abandoned (er, that's net-book-agreement, nothing to do with basketball) - so no big surprise. I'll miss their coffee shop more than the books; very cosy and friendly and unpretentious. But, they were very supportive of local authors, and that is really irreplaceable.
