The Bible is deliberately vague on the date or even the season (winter, spring, or fall) of the birth of Jesus. I find this particularly interesting since, the Bible can be extremely specific about other important dates, such as when to hold Passover or the Day of Atonement. I can only conclude that we aren't intended to know the date of the birth of Jesus.

Think of it in the same way as the burial place of Moses. The Bible records the location of where Abraham and Sarah are buried, a rather "disputed" area in Hebron. It also records the exact location of the Tomb of Joseph, on a plot of land previously purchased by his father Jacob and that was subsequently destroyed by Palestinians in the year 2000 of the Common Era.

On the other hand, the exact location of the Tomb of Moses is deliberately hidden in the Bible. Popular commentary suggests that the location was hidden on purpose so that the Children of Israel wouldn't continue to mourn at his tomb beyond the prescribed time and not enter into the Canaan to claim the Land of Israel as God commanded.

This tells me that we are most likely not intended by our Creator to celebrate the birth of the Messiah on December 25th or on any other date. If we were, we would probably have been given a date on the Hebrew lunar calendar, rather than an arbitrary date set on the modern solar calendar.

Christmas is a modern Christian and Secular tradition. It's also a heck of a money maker. Black Friday, the day after the American Thanksgiving holiday, is said to be the day of the year that businesses are able to sell enough goods and services (for Christmas) to operate in the black (profitability).

While I don't celebrate Christmas for the reasons I've stated (no Biblical mandate), I actually don't have a problem with Christmas if people want to use it to behave more like the person the day is named after. If people choose to try to be more like their Creator on that date, to do more kindness, seek more justice, show more mercy, then who am I to argue? I only wish two things:

    1. That more people would use December 25th to actually behave better towards one another.
    2. That the believers who do use the date for that purpose would behave that way the other 364 days of the year.

I'll actually be going out to dinner tonight, since my wife, son, and daughter will all be available and it'll be nice to have a small paid holiday, but come tomorrow morning, I'll also be happy to sleep in late, spend the morning sipping a hot cup of coffee, and not have to worry about cleaning up the wrapping paper and paying off the Christmas bills. Truly "Peace of Earth". :)

Well that was a hell of a way to say Merry Christmas.
Not to mention now I am confused. I thought you are jewish and celebrated Hanukkah? My friends that were jewish while growing up did a present a day for like 7 days or was it 10? If I remember right, I think it had something to do with the new year? And why do I get the feeling that we have had this conversation before? :biggrin
