Government backs call for classroom coding

The teaching of computer science must become more relevant to modern needs, said the government.

The government said the current teaching of IT was "insufficiently rigorous and in need of reform".

The call for change came in a response to an industry report which looked at technology teaching in the UK.

Without reform future UK workers would lack key skills and the nation would lose its standing as a video games and visual arts hub, said the report.

I won't hold my breath, given 1/4 of maths teachers in schools don't even have A-level math...

Basic literacy and numeracy appear lacking in the xbox generation...

Even if you look at Computer science graduates only about 20% cut the mustard...

Get a maths, science or engineering degree, struggle to earn 50k, get an MBA earn 6 figures, play footy well earn 7 figures...

These are the signals we are sending to the current generation.

Games programmer jobs are well known for being extremely demanding and comparatively low paid. Until this changes they will continue to struggle for talent.

It isn't any better in most colleges and Unis. They need to understand the difference between the fast paced and developing world of IT and other subjects like maths and English etc. The problem is you will struggle to get these institutions to recognise and give their staff the time needed to keep up with the rate of change in this industry. Building certs into courses is a good way of forcing institutions to keep up, but the vendor specific nature is bound to be an issue.
