Boy what a week, Sat my first MCP on Thursday and then Friday had an interview for the Network Managers Job at the school I'm placed at.

GOT THE JOB................. Start 1st April, hope its not an April fools

They also made a slight change to the contract before I accepted the offer. They made it a 42 weeks a year contract not a 52 but to compensate for the loss of earnings they pused the payscale up another 5 points. :D

I'm one happy man today, off to the boozer now for a few :morebeer :alc

@mikesta, Any news on your interview yet?

Thanks Guys, My job really wont change all that much apart from I'll get the blame when things wrong  Its more a case of they don't want me to leave when my current contract runs out in august so they magically found me a job. :D

To anyone finding it hard to get your break in IT I really must encourage you to keep at it, I've made the change from a forklift truck driver to the IT manager of a local secondary school and had to work damn hard to get there, but its worth it in the end. Just keep at it. :D

    Well Done!

I know what its like working for a school!

I was the ICT Network Manager for a large, 800 students, 75 staff school.

But i didnt get the holidays off, frankly they were too valuable for getting things done!

Hows it going now you've started??

Nothing different to be honest, I was doing the job before but didn't have the title for the pay. It does however give me more of a say when it comes to planning and spending so that area of the job will be different after I've had my two week easter break.

Your right about the holidays being the best time to get things done but if they want to pay be the same rate for 10 weeks less then I'm not going to complain now am I? :D

    Thanks for asking Matt.

What was the name of the school you worked in and how long did you work there for. Did you find that having the network mangers position within a school helped when moving jobs or did you get the attitude of a school not being a real place of work so its not real experience?

    Hi

I worked for a school called Westwood St. Thomas in Wiltshire.

13 -18 school, about 800 kids and 75 ish staff.

I think having the network managers position did help when i was moving jobs, as having that kind of position looks very good on the CV, but being public sector i dont think it looked as good as industry.

However i'd say that you can work alot harder in the public sector for less pay and half the budget! (and half the staff in my case!)

My main problem when moving jobs was my age, i was 21 when looking for a new job, but i had 3+ years full time and 2 years part time experience.

People talk about discrimination against older people, however i felt age was holding me back!

Now the school employs a 30 year old technician, who frankly doesnt know anything and who i hear complaints about all the time from my ex colleagues.

I guess the school should have wise'd up and paid me what i deserved, but they are paying for it now!

    And boy its sweet!!

(But i do feel sorry for the kids....)

    Matt

    PS

I hope one day to return to the public sector, IT manager for a school with some staff under me and a good wage. I got some real job satisfaction where i was, (helping the kids) but i just wasnt appreciated, over worked and very under paid.

    Its a shame.
