Certification isn't just so you can meet the requirements of a few job listings... certification is so you can make your CV more attractive to employers. If you had two candidates that were roughly equal in experience level, and one was certified on only XP and the other was certified on XP + Vista + 7, which one do you think is more likely to get the job, even if the employer doesn't currently use Vista or 7?

...consider that, and then tell me whether it's worth the cost to keep your certifications up-to-date. :)

    Hmmm, goals for 2010...

    - MCSA Security
    - Eradicate my debts
    - Complete my first level 2 Uni course
    - Get back into shape
    - Spend less time faffing with printer and desktop hardware and more time configuring and administrating servers.

I am not usually any good at keeping to a plan like this, so hopefully putting it here in black and white will help.

I think I achieved none of last years goals. Need to get a bit more motivated this new year. My goals are:

    Work
Help out with a complete site move. Should be good - new building, cabling, equipment and an office that isn't a 10 foot by 4 foot server room:biggrin.
    Finish the PAT testing!
    Train up a new technician
Help my manager with a server 2003 / XP to 2008/Windows 7 migration.

    Study
Start on my OU top-up degree - Bsc Computing
Windows 7 70-680 Certification, paid for and requested by work
    70-270 and 70-290

    Other Stuff
9th Kyu (Although thats in a couple of weeks time, not next year, so 8th, 7th and maybe 6th Kyu for next year)
Start running, and actually stick with it!
Get my debts sorted, and never use credit again.
    Save!
See West Ham stay up - although this is a)Outside of my control and b)Looking less likely every week:(
    EDIT: Oh, and quit smoking

I don't think I put my goals for 2009 up here... can't remember and don't really feel like going back and taking a look. I DO have goals for this coming year though (as well as for the remainder of this year).

    2009 Goals Remaining
    • ICND1 (CCENT)
    • Ebay more of my junk to finish off the last of my quick $1000 emergency fund (Thank you Dave Ramsey).

    2010 Goals
    • ICND2 (CCNA)
    • MCSA
    • MCSE
    • CEH
    • Security+
    • Network+
    • Pay down all credit card based debt.
    • Have another baby (or babies depending if our current procedures work this month).
    • Go on a mission trip (most likely Haiti).
    • Actually leave the state for a family vacation!!

Clearly in no particular order, but if I had to pick, it would definitely be the babies.

    2009 Goals

    Gain MCSA: Messaging Check
Gain Citrix Certified Administrator Update Coming Soon
    Gain CCNA Check
    Promotion to Systems Administrator Check

    Plus also completed:

    CCENT Check
    MCSE Check
    ITIL v3 Foundation Check
71-685 Windows 7 Enterprise Desktop Support TechnicianCheck

I'm yet to decide on my 2010 goals as there is some of 2009 left and I have one more objective to complete.

A goal is not a goal unless you put the effort in to achieve it. Otherwise it is nothing more than a wish or a dream.

Things I want to learn and/or certify in:
Exchange 2007 (or maybe 2010 instead)
SQL Server 2008 (Admin + BI)
Systems Centre Config Manager & Operations Manager
    Citrix Presentation Server
Possibly upgrade my MCSE 2000/2003 to Enterprise Architect...

Other things I want to do:
Get involved with SharePoint 2010 (already downloaded the beta!)
    Buy a new car
Brew a decent beer at home
Go somewhere warm with the girlfriend
Get a decent mark on the OU course I'm starting in Feb

I think that's more than enough to be getting on with!!

    Last year:

    CCIE R&S Written
    MCSE: Security
    MCSE: Messaging
    CCNA: Security

Continue to train and mentor new writers.
Would like to start running again.
Definitely going back to East Asia.

Eh, six out of seven isn't bad. But the year's not over yet!!! :p

Also picked up CCNA: Voice - a necessary hazard of the job. ;)

    Next year:

    CCNA: Wireless
    MCITP: SA (70-646)
    MCITP: EA (70-647)
perhaps one or more CCSP exams

Prioritize study/prayer time - and I'm not talking about cert studies! :biggrin
Prioritize evangelistic opportunities - share the gospel more often (I thought about putting a number on it, but it didn't seem right to do so... after all, shooting for numbers is NOT the point!)
    East Asia Part III
    Train and mentor new writers.
    Start running again.
Am I ever gonna do that Divemaster swim test? :ohmy

I didn't really set myself any proper goals last year (I don't think) but I did plan to get into doing some running or something to lean up a bit as I don't excercise. Incidentally I still havent done it.

This year has been pretty much wasted for me as I havent done anything until the last month, where things have took dramatic changes. After work getting me down for so long (and also family tensions) but being stuck due to having my loan to pay I have been stuck in limbo, wanting to get out and get away for a while see the world a bit, but unable to due to needing to pay my loan and wasting all my spare money in some unknown way.

Anyway things got quite stale with my gf and had been for a while with neither of us wanting tying down with commitment so stuck in a rut. Start of Nov we decided to call it a day after 7 years together which was the hardest decision ive ever had to make, as a result I ended up running through everything and found that the things that were getting me down had caused me to put a lot less effort into my relationship and as a result had caused me to lose the only person I could escape it with.

Anyway where does this relate to goals, well, I found the fix to help me out of the bad place I felt I was in mentally was to plan, and as a result I have discovered my main goal for 2010 which is to save alongside my loan a calculated amount which means that by next december it will be gone and I will be a free man.
2010 is like my preparation year for 2011.
Workwise I'm not sure if I can stay at my current job so that remains to be seen but I am currently giving serious consideration to joining up with the IT Can Help network as a volunteer outside of work

Finish the MCSA by April then start on the Cisco certs...

Leave my current contract and head down south to London town for a better rate and to gain more exposure to other tech as I seem to becoming stale in my current role.

Put on some weight (muscle building, baby!)

Concentrate on making techno music on my Mac using Logic studio....

Its gonna be a good one!

I shouldn't have tempted fate by posting this, as I've gone and broke my foot, so 9th Kyu grading looks likely to be postponed:(. Still, I can make an earlier start on the 70-680 instead.
