Hi everyone my names Bobby from Birmingham

Have previously completed a degree in computer science but this was 5 years ago and i never got
into working in IT due to being out for a year with bad health.
I guess with that break I just got in the habbit of going from basic admin jobs.

Well now i find myself faced with the prospect of handing out nearly 5k to advent training to work
myself upto a certified database specialist by earning the MCTS SQL Server 2005 certification and
    further more the MCITP certification.

Well all the brochures and pamplets are all very nice and well presented and even the chap who
came to meet me about the course sold it well.

Pretty much stating a job is highly possible in desktop support within 6 months.

For now I would love to know anyones opinions on the courses and whether they are really relevent
or needed in todays IT industry?

Also whether anyone has had experience with Advent training before or heard any good reviews.

    Much appreciated.

    Thanks

Hey fella - welcome to CF. Just search the forums for 'Advent' - there are (probably quite literally) hundreds of posts relating to them, they seem to be the main Training Provider people ask questions about on here. Those posts will contain plenty of useful advice that I won't rehash here - but I would ask that you take a long hard think about whether its worth you paying five grand for a certification in SQL Server when no-one is likely to let you near a database without a good couple of years' experience in IT first.

Training providers will give you all the old flannel under the sun about getting you a job paying thirty grand the minute you qualify - it simply doesn't work like that. The best advice I can give you, honestly, is to get your CV out to prospective employers and all the major IT agencies and start looking for an IT job first. Then you can think about 'needing' to spend a small fortune on certificates :)

Welcome to CF! As zeb said Advent have. Been discussed many times before and a lot of people look down on them as they are a training provider and most of the people on here advocate self study.

What I will say is that self study is not for everyone and some people need a structured course to move forward. Have a look at the other threads and if you have any questions feel free to post them or you can PM me if you like as I currently study with Advent although I am on the she admin track.

    Good luck
