Am very new to the VPC software and tried to install it but XP Home didnt like it, so I quit install. However, have been led to believe that it WILL work fine if I carry on the install.

So, for now, I would like to set up VPC with Win 2000 and XP Pro, so I can play with them. Am currently studying A+ Tech.

Is there anywhere I can get free versions (trial) of the OSs? Clipped versions that are good for VPC or trial versions that last a decent length of time?

You can download some virtual hard disks (VHD's) off Microsoft's site here, buy the Microsoft Training kits with trial versions of operatings systems or the last option is to purchase a technet plus subscription.

I didn't know that, you could try using the VPC images with the free VWware Player.

or download the trial ISO's and install into Sun's Virtualbox also free.
