    Hi All,

Posting this as I received a letter in the mail yesterday inviting me for a job interview. I haven't been for an interview in about 17 years (got stuck in a rut in present job) so very nervous about it. I work at present as a Data Input Operator, so not much real IT experience. The job is with ISD which is part of the NHS located in Edinburgh.

I am hoping that someone can provide me with some much needed advice about how to go about giving an interview, what to expect etc.

Will be very grateful for any help.

    Cheers!!!

    GO GO GO, Pablo1888 :D

I'd expect some form of informal test questions, and the standard interview cr*p (where do you see yourelf, biggest achievment, how do you see yourself fitting in, etc). Whatever, be confident, give it your best shot - you have nothing to lose, and if it doesn;t work out, its good experience and keep your head up - fingers crossed m8 :D

btw, theirs a diminutive red-haired Scotsman somewhere around these Boards who may be able to offer some good advice - don't go too far away ....

    Good Luck Pablo1888,
Test questions are pretty normal these days but the type of questions depends on what job you are applying for.
As Jakamoko stated expect the usual questions and doing your best to look good is essential ie. haircut, polish your shoes, iron your shirt with sharp creases (am getting flashbacks to military life).
Maintain eye contact as well as it shows you are paying attention. This is also important when you are answering their questions.
If you dont know the answer to a question dont try and cover yourself, be honest and say that you dont know but show them that you know the resources that would help find the answer.
Lastly, smile and be confident (even if you dont feel it).

    Best of luck,

    Mike

    Hi Pablo

A few questions spring to mind before I could comment.

    a) What do they do?
    b) What is the job?
    c) Why is a Glasgow man going to work in Edinburgh (I am a west coast Scot)

    Hi Sandy,

In answer to your questions the job is for an IT Technician (setting up personal computers and associated peripheral devices and installing a wide variety of software etc.) and it is with the Information Services Division, who collect, validate and interpret information on Health and Social Care in Scotland.

This is my first IT interview and it happens to be located in Edinburgh.

    Hi Paul

They might give you a PC to fix, install on the network, install a bit of software or install a printer on. With your certs you should be fine.

Sounds like the new Information Centre in England.

Good luck and keep us informed on how you get on.

Thanks a lot guys for the good wishes!!!

Had the interview and received the news that I didn't get it.

Feedback was that it was a very good interview, but there was a couple of guys that had more experience.

Keeping the old chin up regardless!!
