286!! I needed 300. I didn't feel too confident about this one as I've not used it in the wild for long enough.

Sat the course obviously which was great. Watched the Nuggets. Went through a lot of the resources on the SLOG and other peoples sites.

A friend of mine bought the Exam Cram book, has anyone read this? I used to like them for my MS studies because you used to get a free testing engine on CD that would put you through your paces.

I'm going to go away, give myself maybe 6 weeks. Rebuild my lab at home with the 60 day trial. Continue to work on it in work althought ATM I'm only patching hosts on top of your usual admin, nothing fancy with resource pools or HA etc. I need to go over the Blueprint again "Obviously".

    Wish me luck, Jim

PS Whats the rush? I think the VCP-410 exam expires in Feb next year so I wanted it done and dusted TBH so I can decide if I'm good enough for the VCP-5 exam. You get 6 months grace before you have to sit a VCP-5 course if you passed the VCP-4

    Jim,

I know many people who attempted the exam quite soon after the course and didn't pass, it's not an easy one (I haven't sat it yet but want to do so before the end of the month).

As far as VCP 5 goes, if you have the VCP 4 certification you have a grace period to taking the VCP 5 exam without any other training requirements, that grace period ends on the 29th of Feb, what that does mean is that if you pass your exam in December you only have until the end of Feb to pass VCP 5 before having to sit another qualifying course, NOT 6 months from passing the VCP 410 exam.

As far as resources go, definitely have a look over on my blog for more material.

Thanks mate, this is it I'm feeling the pressure a little because as generous as my employers are, I can't see them paying for a version 5 course anytime soon after version 4.

I'll have a good root on your site tonight mate, I've been on it, thought it was excellent TBH but I haven't had a deeper look. Appreciate your help mate

Hi Jim, sorry that you didn't quite make it - very close to a passing score though! I'm sure you'll get it next time, remember to focus all your effrorts on the blueprint - the most important resource of all. I'm not personally a fan of the Exam Cram book, too many errors throughout all the sections and I've read through it cover to cover.

Best of luck for next time, I'm sure you'll nail it! Scott.

Thanks guys, I did rush into it. I'd like to say I'm going to take my time but with the VCP5 being released I need to get a move on.

Thanks very much for the comments on the book Scott, minor errors could cost me £130! I was emailing a business developer of GK's as I'm attending a Powershell course in September. Naturally I explained I'd been on one of GK's courses and you came up, as you do, and he mentioned that you are one of the few vExperts in the UK??!! I had no idea, I mean obviously you know your stuff to the nth degree but if that's true...... how lucky was I :)

Exam booked for mid December. I really need to nail this as my 2008 skills are slim and Citrix are even worse! All of which I need to be bad ass in work :( I'd better get a move on!

Sorry to hear that you failed this exam but sure you'd pass next try. Just out of curiosity did you go through the blueprint as well as the mock exams via vmware's web site.

The reason am asking is because I would be sitting this exam very soon as I have setup two vmware hosted labs and vcenter server using openfiler as nfs and scsi shared storage.

I have also gone through the blueprints and currently watching the trainsignal videos etc. Anyway, best wishes mate and sure you'd defeat it next round.

Ah cheers mate, just trying to keep up with you. Maybe if I take the VCP on a dinner date first then on the way home ask it does this rag smell of chloroform ...... I'll have a chance of smashing it.

Blueprint was my guide on what else to learn outside of the course but I found on the day there was just too much I didn't know about because as the trainers tell you, the course isn't enough. To be honest I can't remember, and couldn't say even if I did, exactly what subjects I had trouble with. I only just failed it but it was quite frustrating.

I didn't do mock questions which was a massive mistake as I usually get my hand in my pocket for a legit test engine. I'll be looking for one today, thanks for reminding me mate.

Giving myself 6-8 weeks to go over everything again. Get the lab book out from the course and practice in my lab if its not all gone past its sell by date by now :(

Howdy CF'ers. I'm back and needing some motivation to nail this VCP 4 so thought, where better than good old Certforums to help me get back into studying. Just reading my Scott Lowe VCP book now. Exam booked for the end of Feb! Already scared but think I've left myself enough time plus I've got a lot more hands on experience since my first attempt. Hopefully make the difference. Jim

Hey jk good luck with the studying if your going to have trouble passing another box through household managements itil proceedure you should take a look at the vtardis project craigie has seen it too and you can nick bits of it to create a virtualized cluster with very little resources. The project used an ml something with 8gbs ram to create quite a few hosts and way over commited ram main stumbling block was spindles but a 120 ssd sorts that out.

Aye, at the moment I have setup the following:

    1 x ML115 Quad Core with 8GB RAM with ESXi5 installed
    2 x Nested ESXi5 installed
2 x HP P4000 Virtual SAN Appliance, Volumes replicating every 30 minutes
1 x Windows Server 2003 R2 64 Bit with vCentre installed along with VUM to patch hosts

Not the fastest in the world, just need to get another server now to replicate this setup and I can test SRM :D

I have two of those Microservers with a QNAP for shared storage at home. Currently running as a HyperV cluster which I am happy with. I maxed out the memory and got an extra NIC for each as well. If I had of thought at the time I should have got a dual NIC though and I may do at some point just to expand things.
