Being a contract worker is like a warranty...either you are about to expire or you're being extended.

The latter happened to me (again) today. I was set to expire three weeks from today, so decided to be "proactive" and approach the gal in HR. She was in the middle of something and said she'd come and find me.

Time passed. Lunch came and went. In IM,. she kept going on and offline.

Finally, I got a call from my recruiter who said that my current employer has extended my contract to November 15th (woohoo and boo at the same time). On the heels of that call, the HR gal IM'ed me asking if I had a minute to talk (of course, I did).

She said that basically, the boss loves me. I've done everything they've asked of me. No performance issues at all. They are, however, still evaluating their need, hence the extension of my contract rather than a job offer.

We chit chatted about what it would take to push the powers-that-be into hiring me. I mentioned that I've been keeping a "needs" list of things I see that could be done (or done better) that fall within my skill sets. She approved and suggested sending it to the boss. Also, she suggested making sure that the powers-that-be are aware of my full range of skill sets (HTML and CSS come to mind, since everything around here is web based).

Everyone is well aware (because I made HR aware and she made management aware) that I want to work for the place, permanent, full-time. Now, it's just a matter of progressing forward and trying to make it happen.

Thought I'd share that little gem with you all. Not everything I wanted, but it's moving in the right direct. I've been validated, so now I feel like a parking ticket.

Hey Trip, much congratulations on the extension :) :hug

It might not be permanent, but it's a good solid extension whilst they review your plan for company domination :ohmy 8)

Your moving in the right direction. If they didn't want you around they wouldn't keep extending your contract. It just takes management ages to make their mind up sometimes. Keep doing what your doing. 8)

That is great news Trip! I am sure your wife is going to be tickled pink about it too. Make sure you pass on that list while thoughts of you are still fresh in his head. Keep adding to it too. You may need to refresh his memory as Nov moves closer.

Well...the missus will be semi-tickled. She's a tad bit nervous about my continued "temporary" status.

The boss was just by with a hard copy of one of the manuals I've produced (all almost 200 pages of it). He wants me to go though it, sentence-by-sentence, to make sure there aren't any errors in spelling, grammar, and the like. Little does he know that I spent most of the last two days doing just that in the online version.

Trick is, the guide for the most recently released version of the software is locked and I've been working on my local version and saving it to the main branch. I'll need to consult one of the developers about where corrections need to be made.

Looks like next week is already booked.

Trip that's some good news! I hope that you will be hired. It seems like they do really enjoy working with you since they did extend your contract. What ever happens Trip, all the best!
