Environmental variables

    Does any one use these and if so what was the benefit that you got from using them?

    Yes everyday.

    Well for instance most people use the PATH environment variable.
    Many on unix will use HOME.

    As a developer typically I use things like M2_HOME or JAVA_HOME, APPDATA etc.

    Sometimes http proxy settings get stored in environment variables.

    Its pretty common to find config for servers or other programs set in environment variables at work.
