in the end i formatted the drive and re-installed server only. still no nic detected, its an on-board type. looks like server is not compatible with the mobo. i have a pci nic so I'll try that and see if it see's it then.

Silly question - you *did* install the chipset drivers from the motherboard CD?

I hate stating the painfully obvious... but it could be a dead NIC...

yep installed the drivers, xp picked up the nic straight away, but server doesn't seem to see it. tomorrow i'll stick a pci nic in it and hopefully that will work.

I've come across this before when dual-booting - one thing I did which worked was unbind TCP/IP from the NIC in Server and re-bind it. That worked once (though Christ alone knows why)
