If you want to keep tabs on exactly how much your downloading over any given period, check out NetMeter

Damn good - it gives details of what you've up/downloaded so far, plus forecasts of what you can expect to up/download over a day, week, month, etc, based on current usage, on your internet (dial-up/ adsl) or LAN adapter. Very nice.
