Been in IT over a year now and was looking to move on from my current employer but honestly Im seeing a pattern of more work equaling less money.. I see job adds that list all your roles and all the experience you need then when I look at salary its under 20k! There is litterally no point me leaving my emoloyer unless the oppourtunity was huge.

Hey mate. One year isn't very long and many of us have been in similar situations. My first IT job paid £13,333. The solution is to skill up and move up the ranks. Demonstrate you're not a plodder and can handle increasingly complex tasks. Moving around while keeping the same job title won't really do much for you. In terms of pay, If you are on a service desk and you get the chance to be a network administrator or server admin, but the money is only a bit more, it's important to see what sorts of wage these jobs command when you're time served, say three years in. Then it can be lucrative moving company if they haven't upped your wage in line with your skills. You'll know when you're worth more because there won't be anything you can't handle. I guess my message is, stay in IT. It can pay well, you just need to plan your next step including certification. Employers have their cake and eat it. Don't lose out because you're the only candidate who didn't have an MCSE or CCNA or what have you

    Hi Juelz,

Personally, I don't. But I am based down in London so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it.

I think Jim has pretty much hit the proverbial Nail in all honesty. I can use my case as an example. I am working on my Cisco certs while working in a Remote Desktop role. Once I have my CCNA / CCNP and a bit of experience, I can honestly see my wage tripling if I play my cards right, maybe more if I consider contracting as an option as well. Don't get me wrong, I will need to pass 5 Exams and still get experience but that there is a MASSIVE incentive for me.

That's it mate, hard work and determination and there can be some silly money up for the taking in IT. I've seen a great many people achieve it since I started in IT in 1999 :S

Yeah I get that I really do, I think my position is actually paid well compared to these other places, I've been saying to my boss he isn't paying enough but from looking at other jobs he's paying well. It seems to earn the good money you have to be working for many many years which isn't great with a family as large as mine I guess.

How big are we talking mate? Sad truth is there is no quick route. Fastest rise to the top I've seen has still taken about five years. Year first line. Two years second. Three years third roughly to start getting close to 40k. Course everywhere is different. You could start your first IT job on 40k plus. I don't mean to sound like I know all the answers because I don't. Contracting is a quick way to earn top dollar but I wouldn't bother until you get to third line as the rates for first and second line aren't great according to my friend

What else would you do? I don't know anything that pays as well as IT without serious study and opportunities like a doctor or lawyer, and IT can earn more than these traditional jobs

I work in the education sector so the money is ok for the time being, I know I get a yearly rise of a whopping 1% and because I will pass my probation in August, unless I do something extremely stupid, then I get another rise etc. The problem with my role is that I am just a technician and I do love what I do, however I know the pay should be more. I am practically responsible for a lot of stuff that goes on and as it seems at the moment I am also training the new techie, who has has 7 years experience as opposed to my 3.

I tend to do anything that I am asked but thats my nature, I like to help, I hate seeing people struggle.

I know one of the other techies in a separate dept who also does the AV side of things, but gets paid for it, where as I dont.

I should make a bit of a fuss to be fair, but I wont until I am over the line in regards to my probation period has passed.

Another reason I wont moan is because of the training, I know they are going to put me through my masters, which has now been moved to next year on my request, they are putting me through my microsoft certs and some cisco certification. This is all for free as well

Definitely, that's really good training. You'll reap the rewards in the long run and they'll struggle to keep you

I am in a very similar position to you. Education doesn't seem to pay well but the holidays and the fact that they pay for CPD outweighs the shortfall in wage.

I'm currently at the top and there are only two possible promotions for me. Deputy Director of IT and Director of IT. The deputy role doesn't exist yet but our trust have an urgent need for one as the Director is mega over worked

Hope you smash your masters and things work out for you
