I always wish I'd gone into the forces at a younger age but seeing as I didn't, from time to time I think about joining the Reserves. I'm 36 and while I know I'm not too old, I wonder am I trying to do something when the ship has already sailed. There's a Signals close to me, which is what I'd choose anyway. Just wondered if anyone wanted to share any thoughts ideas or felt similar to me

Have a look at the requirements for the Basic Fitness Test and Combat Fitness Test, also look at the bleep test as it was used previously.

I think it's a good thing to do, having spent 10 years of my early life serving as a regular soldier I can say that it was an interesting time.
I catch up with old friends once a year at a get together and it's like it was yesterday (bumped in to guys I hadn't seen in 18 years, it was unreal but fun).

Was going to join RNR at one point but couldn't go a year without seeing my kid so didn't bother.

Cheers Simon. I'm not very fit but not that overweight so think it's doable. Might see if I can visit the local place and see what it's about

I enjoyed my time in and it certainly made me who I am today.

It's obviously not for everyone but anyone who wants to try it should at least have a look.

Well I know a lot of people who didn't have the discipline but it's good for learning additional life skills.

Definitely mate I can imagine it's a shock to a lot of people. I also imagine you get some people who think they are a big deal in Civvy world and can't take that someone is bossing them about. I might not go through with it as I'd have to think about being deployed. I would be terrified but would do it of course. It's not a decision to be taken lightly at all is it

Well that's it, you have to go in to it with your eyes open.

I volunteered for all my tours (NI, Gulf War 1, Cyprus and Falklands (not the war as I was 12 at the time)), I was shocked how many people suddenly developed glass backs when the Gulf War came around yet there I was a month after a 7 month tour of NI and I was over in Saudi Arabia.

Deployments aren't a bad thing you know, sure you're away from your family but it's good experience.

That's how I'd look at it mate, a scary life experience I couldnt experience any other way. TBH I'm 36 and hopefully won't die any time soon but when people say I have no regrets, I really want to mean it. I'll always regret poor decisions, bought a house at the wrong time etc but those are fine if I learn from them, its more what I don't do than what I do do
