How much money can I spend for you?? Realistically though, how much is you budget? What do you want to do with the pc specifically? This will then determine the hardware that you need.

Like Nug says - it depends on budget. My BF recently made himself this system, which I'll soon steal in the typical other-halfly manner:

    3.73ghz Extreme Edition Processor
    500gb SATA HDD
    Geforce GTX 7800 Ultra
Asus P5ND2-Deluxe (he will Sli two of the Geforce cards eventually)
    2gb Corsair RAM (2 x 1Gb) about 667Mhz

He'll be getting the new Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum (I'll get his Audigy2 - woo :dry )

A 23" widescreen flat thinger. And some optical drives. In a clear acrylic case.

    The utter, utter b*****d.

Okay zx, I think you really need to sit down and define what you really will use the pc for. If you want to use it for study then you'll need a decent motherboard and a decent cpu , fast hdd's and lots of ram (to run vmware??). You won't need an intel extreme edition cpu or a top line graphics card as you'll still be able to game quite well on it. On the other hand if you want to have a pure game machine then you'll have to go for a higher end cpu and graphics card which would be a real waste if you're just running a few virtual machines and the occasional game. As always it depends on your budget but I tend to try and focus on what I really need for the job rather than on just getting everything thrown in that I might use sometime (if I have time).
