Training Kit said DISM can not be used to capture new images, did some digging and apparently that's incorrect. Looks like DISM can do everything that imagex does.

Basically the norm. was seen as using ImageX to capture the WIM and any maintenance was carried out with DISM. DISM was a new tool introduced in to Windows 7 to replace Package Manager (pkgmgr.exe), PEimg, and Intlcfg tools used with Windows Vista.

I guess they kept ImageX around for those with prior experience.

Hopefully the exam will not have any ambiguity when it comes to questions regarding images and those 2 tools.

    Hi Pizzaboy,

The 70-680 Training Kit is correct, because it specifically addresses DISM for Windows 7.

In Windows 7, DISM cannot be used to capture images. ImageX must be used for this purpose instead. In Windows 8, ImageX has been deprecated, and the functionality of ImageX has now been integrated into DISM for Windows 8.

Therefore, for the 70-680 exam, DISM cannot be used to capture images. However, for your Windows 8 exams, DISM can be used for this purpose.

Although the Windows 8 DISM can be used to capture a Windows 7 image, this functionality is not native to the DISM that ships with Windows 7 or the DISM that ships with the WAIK for Windows 7. Therefore, this new functionality is unlikely to be tested in the 70-680 exam.

Finally, the note at the top of the page in the link that you referenced in your post says the following: "Applies To: Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2." It doesn't mention Windows 7 at all.

I hope I have answered your question. Good luck with your certifications.

    Hi BB88,

You're welcome. I wish you every success in your 70-680 exam on Wednesday. Also, please remember to learn your Windows 7 commands thoroughly, including those for DISM and ImageX.
