Slight spin off from my previous thread but I figured this might save a lot of newbs asking us what certs/quals we had to get into IT. If you had some please state them.

I had . . . . NONE. To get my first role as a Trainee Mainframe Operator at IBM all I had was GCSE's and A'Levels and a polite demeanour (what my boss said :D). None of my A'Levels were in IT (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Lit).

    How about you?

another call for none. Was 'working towards my A+' but, as you can see from my Certifications list....

I still have little in the way of certifications, yet my career is progressing well enough.

    none.

I'd failed a BTEC in IT (due to a large amount of disorganisation on the part of both me and the college) and apparently that was all I needed. Probably helped that I was being interviewed by someone with precisely zero IT background.

I had good GCSEs and A Levels, and a devil of an interview technique. I had the A+, but had to explain to one of my interviewers what it was.

So up to now, in the UK at least, its looking pretty common that most of us have just needed an interest in working in IT to get our 1st role. One thing to note tho is that this may not be true these days as I started out 10 years ago (its flown over) and no doubt a few of you started years ago too. Lets just see what other comments we get

I had a BSc in computer science, HND in computing, A levels and GCSE's.

Still struggled to land my first IT job, 100's of applications and several months searching.

Cert's barely existed in 1995, a few people were maybe into Novell, but that wasn't my thing. So no I had no certs, in fact I didn't get any certifications until around 7 years into my IT career.

The certification business has become a huge industry in itself, some of the implications of this have been good, like some better training resources for certain subjects, others implications are possibly less positive, people possibly study mainly vendor specific subjects from a limited perspective, people learn a lot of marketing and product pr, learning is tied to a product cycle, continual testing, etc.

Personally I'd like to see access to real education made easier and cheaper and more people perhaps getting multiple masters throughout their life through modular part time study.

Hmm depends how i look at it
I did my NT4 MCSE and A+/N+ while I was working part time at an internet cafe
I had done some upgrade project theres too

The certs really helped me get my first real job (and a contact I made at the net cafe) but that doesnt apply to everyone, i had the skill to back the cert up, not everyone does when they are that green

Its looking pretty grim for certs getting you your 1st IT job ha ha judging by this thread you MAY be better off with none! (to begin with!)
