i;ve seen a windows application that assigns dhcp IP addresses to other machines on a hub. useful when you don;t have the server edition of the OS.

does anyone know what the application is called and if there;s an open source version?

    cheers.

A nat server (part of routing and remote access) can also act as a internal DHCP server as well as Internet Connection Sharing.

Also remember that since Windows 2000 Pro, windows boxes are capable of assigning their own IP addresses using APIPA (Automatic Private IP Adressing).

This is fine for local connectivity, though not much good if you want to hand out specific default gateway. WINS and DNS info.

Most modern ADSL modems, routers, switches etc also have DHCP capability. So, if you are connecting to the net using broadband of some kind, you might want to look closely at the devices you are using.
