I'm working on a Dell 5150 computer which continually boots into a BSOD. I cannot get into safe mode at all. The BSOD message displays Unmountable_Boot_Volume and then gives hexadecimal codes. It sounds like a either a corrupt operating system and/or corrupt hard disk drive?

sounds like the hard drives knackerd can you get to a dos prompt. command line try running a scandisk if you can then run recovery console.

if you cant try installing a new hard drive, and see if you can transfer some data of the old one.

Hi, unfortunately there is no FDD installed, but the mobo does have a FDD controller, so I can instal one. I ran the Dell HDD Diagnostics and the test returned 'Fail'.

Unfortunately, there is no Windows CD with the computer. I ran the Dell F12 Diagnostics check on the system and so far the following errors have been returned:

    1. Error code: 0F00:136C - IDE device failed
    2. Error code: 0F00 1344 - Block 218587 Uncorrectable data error is write protected
    3. Error code: 0F00 1344 - Block 259924 Uncorrectable data error is write protected

Sounds like an unserviceable hard drive.

Sounds to me like a knackered hard drive. Call dell and they will tell you what tests to run and then probably send you a new one.
