Edited some Data and got a very surprising B- and this is from a CV i knocked up in 30mins a year ago.

It said it could me be more professional and was too long, i can certainly tweak that.

If it is to be believed its pretty cool.

Just make sure you edit details otherwise you and your references are gonna get calls from them trying to sell their Premium CV service or similar :)

Much as it's sometimes annoying to have constant threads about it on here, This is the best site you could possibly use for CV advice (or failing that another site specialising in IT). No Generic CV construction/review site is able to correctly produce a CV for technical fields (unless they specialise in that field).

The simple fact is that unless they specialise in the field, they simply cannot know what is required to get a CV in that field picked. On here, sure no-one is an expert in CV's, but we each have our own CV's, have seen plenty, and come from all different areas & levels of IT (some from a hiring managers perspective). You may get conflicting opinions on some things, but the key things are pretty consistent, and those where it differs you just need to look at the differences in opinion and decide which you agree with more (or which has generally a higher backing)

    Quite.

I can't see how some algorithm can give any sort of meaningful feedback on a CV.
It might be a bit of fun, but it's like putting your personal info into a slot machine.

    Whatever takes your fancy...

I tried to edit the first post to add this info; but I can't :(

Realised why I was getting low scores as well, apparently because I have loads of abbreviations, namely words like SSH, FTP, MCDST etc etc.

    Hi all,

My name is Sean Weinberg, I am the COO of RezScore.com.

Thank you for the amazing feedback! There seems to be two streams of thought: people who really like the site and people who think we're scammers or resume harvesters or tricksters of some sort. I thought I'd post here to clear up some information.

    • We are real people. You can see my LinkedIn profile here:http://www.linkedin.com/in/seanweinberg and my partner Gerrit's profile here: http://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrithall (he needs to update it, but you get the point).
    • We DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES sell or otherwise misuse your information. I don't even have access to the resume database.
    • We only port your email into our email program if you check one of the opt-in boxes on the homepage. Don't check the boxes, we don't take your data and we don't email you. It's pretty simple.
    • On that note, the only thing we do with your email address is send you our semi-regular newsletter. And yes, we do try and sell you on our products - the site can get pretty expensive to run.
    • If you got some variation of a D or lower, my guess is you uploaded a .pdf. While we do grade them, the parser frequently gets tripped on .pdf meta-data and the grade is not reliable. Try uploading a .doc (no .docx's) of your CV and see if you get a different score.
    • We are not optimized for UK CV's (although we are working on it) so you may have info on it that the parser doesn't know how to treat.
    • Acronyms can kill the algorithm.
    • Your grade is NOT an average of the 3 numerical scores we provide you. We provide those scores because we wanted to add more value for free than just a grade, and frankly we want to throw off anyone trying to reverse engineer the algorithms. The B, I, D scores are separate algorithms from the grader.

I hope that answers all your questions - please feel free to keep posting them. We love getting honest feedback!

If you want proof that we didn't trick the algorithm to give lower grades, just scroll through the grades posed on this thread. Mostly B's or better.

Thats good to hear. Whilst obviously we just have your word on it, it is promising that you took the time to respond to clear up multiple points - not just the emailing issue.

I also like the fact that you are up-front about trying to sell us your services - that too bodes well.

Unless you specifically wrote the parsers to deal with IT specific (or indeed any technical field) CV's, the usefulness of the service is limited. The fact is that only people in the sector can accurately comment on the sector - primarily because our CV's have to be technically detailed. However, the service can help with layout, or phrasing.

It would be quite good if the parser was able to point out specific areas of the CV (ie, by quoting those sections) where perhaps the parser scored it low.

    Hi Fergal,

I agree with you that the parsers utility can be limited for certain kinds of resumes. We're working on creating industry specific version where we'd have a pull down menu pre-upload and turn on that algorithm, but it's awhile away.

That last sentence of yours is a great suggestion - I'm gonna see about putting that together. Thanks for sharing! Any other tips?

Gulbash - congrats on the A-!

L1ONE - we'd love to be handling mor eformats, but finding the appropriate converting and parsing technology (or building it ourselves) can be pretty complicated. Ever use on of those online pdf to word converters? See how often the screw up? :D

Adobe and MSFT are not exactly interested in making it easy

I thought about submitting my resume out of curiosity, but while thinking about how long it would take me to strip out all the personal details, it struck me... it doesn't matter what score my resume gets, because my resume does exactly what it is designed to do: get me interviews. No reason to fix it if it ain't broke! :biggrin

    Hi Boson,

You're absolutely right - if you're getting interviews, who cares what our site says :)

That said, I wish we could find a way to convince you guys that stripping your info isn't necessary. That's not to say I care (don't want someone to read this as encouraging you to include it) - it's just to say that you really don't need to be afraid of RezScore.

I can tell this is a losing battle though :dry
