I don't have to.. Sparky has already explained it perfectly well, i suggest you re-read what he has said.

    Mathematix,

You may be correct in what you are saying but there are certain situations where cool heads prevail and this one is such a situation. Learn to back down, I have learnt the hard way over the years in this regard.

Wizard, I did back down earlier in the thread.

It's simple really, I rubbed some egos the wrong way and they became hostile. And I'm not taking an ounce of the blame.

Does the above make sense to anyone other than Mathematix?

I suggest you take it on the chin and move on, there are greater things in life to worry about whether someone agrees with you or not. Normally when you back down from something, you normally walk away as well. What is this going to prove to anyone?

    So please enough already!!

I agree about "enough already". Just don't pin the blame on me, that's all I ask.

What you guys do with your systems is no concern of mine. Where I work our IT guy does what needs to be done to get systems stable, often staying late to do whatever maintenance is require - no shortcuts whatsoever.

Maybe that's why our systems are nicely stable. :)

Guys, what's with the pile on? Mathematix is simply giving his opinion of what *he* thinks is best, and in some cases, it is the best solution, especially when saved as a last resort.

If we start closing threads and laying the smack down on people who start giving opinions, I'll be the first to walk out the door. Lay off of him, 'k?

without trying to sound facitious aren't the majoroty of people just giving their "opinion" on Mathematix's advice and that was we thought it was a tad short sighted to go straight for the er-install option INSTEAD of trying other options first. I think most people would agree that trying other things first is a better way to trouble shoot a problem.

plus I only said to close the thread to STOP people making this some kind of personal issue not because I wanted to stop people sharing their opinions. this is what *I* think so is just as valid as anything........'k.

Point taken. However, I don't think he ever said you shouldn't ever try other options first. He rather clearly stated that he would use other options, such as the recovery console, if he determined after analysis that the situation called for its use.

That is exactly what I said and continued to try to imply afterwards, BosonMichael.

Got bored when I realised that my words were being twisted to make it sound like I was saying: "The only valid option is to reinstall." Certainly not what I said nor implied.

    That wasn't his only response:

And it really doesn't help when you become sarcastic:

Granted, I don't think he's got all the facts for THIS particular situation for THIS particular laptop. But you guys are telling him to "just give up, take it on the chin, you've lost, quit while you're behind, when are you going to realize you're wrong?" It's sorta sad to see that sort of attitude on these forums, where we can even talk about religion without devolving to that sort of behavior.
