I know I've put this in the Security+ forum but whatever. :biggrin

We all know things change for the CompTIA exams next year so who is gonna try and get the A+, Network+ or Security+ done before the end of the year?

I'm gonna try and get the Security+ done....

Already nailed the A+ and network in august/september but I probably won't speed things to get Sec+ by the end of this year.
Next week I'm taking the ICND1 exam, which means I'll then have a bit over six weeks left... But then again I wonder if it wouldn't be better to continue on the Cisco path while the first part is still fresh in my memory.

Well my 293 exam is in 3 days and after that I will hit the Security+ to try and get it done ASAP. I think I will have a little over a 1 month and a half to complete.

Well the Network+ fell in November, the two A+ exams will fall on Saturday and I've still yet to book the Sec+ but it's looking like one of the local centres has the 18th of Dec available, so at least 2/3 and hopefully 3/3 by the deadline as long as the Sec+ doesn't cause me too many issues.

Personally don't need to worry as I've got them already, however I do wonder how many people will keep their Comptia certs validate after the 3 years?

That's a good question... If I were to get my A+ and Network+ after December 31st, I would be using those to get a job and get experience. However since I am passed that level if I had to renew them, I would probably not, since they are entry level certs. Nowadays I emphasize my MCSA (MCSE soon ) and not so much on the A+ or MCDST...

Hi GBL, has he said why he wants you to do this if you don't mind me asking? Good luck in any case.

This probably isn't the correct thread but I can't get my head around why a person would need to renew an A+ or N+. Could someone enlighten me please? I was under the impression these certs were entry level.

I can see the gain in renewing a CCNA for example as vendor hardware should improve over time, new features etc but I thought the A+ and N+ weren't vendor specific enough to warrant the same process....

He wants me to be up to date with my network + because it deals with IPV4 and IPv6 whilst the last exam deals with IPv4. He just wants me upto date with it.

That seems like a silly reason to have to do it since I don't remember the objectives concerning IPv6 being very in depth at all. If I remember correctly you could learn everything you need to know about IPv6 for the Net+ in less than an hour.

I'll probably look over the Sec+ objectives and see how quickly I think I could do it while I'm off of school in December. That is if I actually sit and pass the CCENT in the next week or so like I plan on.

On a personal level I'd agree, no point renewing.

As for why CompTIA are requiring it for those three, as far as I understand, it is because they are ISO certified certifications (say it quickly) and to retain their ISO's status they must be renewed every three years (source) - on in plainer terms, paperwork to keep people in jobs (self opinion)

Got Project+, Network+, Security+, Server+ and Linux+ not gonna bother getting A+ by year end.

We've been over this already A+, N+ and Sec+ were already ISO/ANSI approved.

This is a scam to comply with a US DoD requirement and thus allow CompTia to make regular money from the US government at the expense of US taxpayers, and self funding certifying people.

I'm not supporting CompTia as an organisation anymore, they have no credibility in my eyes.

I might look into other organisations in future, probably related to post-grad education or special interest groups.

There actually isn't very much on IPv6 on the latest Network so I think GBL must have a sadist boss :D. Many of us have had that over the years.... I assume there is a bridge exam for the N+ if you already have one? Usually the required passing scores are lower on the bridge so that would make it easier.

IPv6? Surely you won't have to deal with that too much?

All you need to know is that it breaks some applications. :biggrin

Im going to go for the Security+ as well, hoping I can knock it out in 6 weeks.

What study materials are you using Sparky? I've been reading around for abit and seen 3 different books that people are suggesting; the Meyers All in One, the Sybex and the Syngress. Im looking to get 1 or 2 ordered tomorrow.

Also, I gather from CompTIA the current exam til 31st Dec 2010 is the SY0-201? and then the 301 is for next year?

    :)

Got the Syngress one here in front of me, very good so far, robust and in depth.

Found a handy study sheet here, a compressed index of definitions if you like: http://www.girlgeekette.net/category/study-guides/
