Is that supposed to be funny? or am I missing something?

Maybe it's one of those quaint European customs, you know, a kind of delicate, indirect way of telling the other half:

"Hey, you're boring me to distraction with all this nattering on and on about this and that and the other. I'm not interested, okay ? Why don't you just shut up and let's have some peace and quiet around here ?"

 

hehe, i think it's what my mother would have called a backhanded compliment
