    Hi all,

Merry xmas all, in case i dont post before the big day.

Iv just got in one of these ipaq desktops, business network machine, quite cool really, 866/128mb, no cd rom. Instead of putting in a pre installed XP HDD, is there a way of loading it from my network?? never done this before. I will get a cd drive off ebay, but in the meantime would be interesting to get ur thoughts.

    Hi Kat,

Yes, you can do an install via the network if you have a server set-up hosting RIS.

Some of the machines I work with don't have a CD-ROM- there is no need.

This will be good practice if you are planning the MCSA/E track or working in a networking environment with Microsoft products.

    Merry Christmas

    Si

it think it may just be easier *ripping* a cd/dvd drive from another machine, if you can... as far as i understand, you will need a network card that supports, i think, a function that allows it to work under DOS (for network boot) and then you will need a server to host the install files...

if im wrong, someone will correct me,

I asume things aren't going as well as you were hoping?!

Depending on the BIOS functionality, you might have to get a drive that it is willing to boot from to do your install.

At least O/S will be on then and a USB CD can be added, so no cd rom-no worries!! Must have been "xmas lager mind blank"!!!!!
