HEY guys think I need help with this one.... My friend reports that his laptop that runs on XP has a folder in place of the command prompt icon with the inscription "Attributes Hidden". He says that he cannot access the command prompt both from the start menu or from RUN.

Can you guys brainstorm on this one with me. :dry

Does a shortcut on the desktop just to 'cmd.exe' work?

Not sure if this will work but try opening the folder going to tools then click on show hidden system folders and apply then see if that works

Nope! Comes up with "Attributes Hidden". Do you think it might have something to do with boot sector virus attack. Am thinking of running a boot scan with avast and then probably carrying out a repair on the OS.

    More brainstorming pls:dry

Sorry, my first answer was a bit short (and may be possibly irrelevant!)

Assuming you're on the 32 bit XP, the .exe for the command prompt is in the directory %systemroot%\System32

With hidden files and folders and system files showing, drill down into there and see if the exe is there.

If it's not, check your friend's recycle bin :blink

Do a find on the file CMD.* It could well be that the extention is changed.

Nobody has so far mentioned that this machine might belong on a Domain where command prompt (along with other things) has been disabled.....
