    Hi all.

As I may have mentioned, I'm not a hardware guy and I'd appreciate any advice.

In a previous thread I mentioned that I'm facing an impending hard disk failure.
I've got hold of a new hard disk and a copy of Acronis true image.

Acronis gives you the option to clone an existing hard disk onto a new one.
I've only got one drive bay as I've got a slim desktop, and one of the options they suggest is to temprarily connect the new HD to the CD-ROM leads if that's all you've got.

I've had a crack at it. The machine boots up fine and Windows (7) automatically detected the new drive and said it was ready to use. However, the new drive doesn't show up anywhere - not in BIOS or in disk management.

It's a SATA drive with no jumpers etc.

Any ideas what I may be missing?

    Cheers.

try setting SATA in the bios to IDE. Have you formatted the new drive?

    Cheers GBL.
I seem to have cracked it, but no idea what I did.
    Just a bit of fiddling.

Part of the problem was that the machine was hanging every time I tried to get into setup - not sure if it was the new disk or a symptom of the old one failing...

Running the clone tool now. Fingers crossed!
