im starting to put together my lab (just got a 3500 from my bro :)) and wondering the best way to download IOS software from. The cisco website requires me to register but not sure if registered guest is good enough to be able to download the software.

If I remember rightly you have to connect to the Cisco ftp site using a passive ftp client.

Can't remember the URL right now, but I know I could get firmware downloads using my normal registered account. I'm not sure if you can get the IOS or if you need to have a service account.

EDIT: ftp.cisco.com - you'll need to know the directory of where you're downloading the ios from, you'll have to get this off the cisco site.

If you need a passive ftp client download for free Filezilla and run it passive mode.

    Grim,

    Here's what you do:
    1. Go to Cisco's website at http://www.cisco.com
    2. Under the Cisco logo in the top left corner, you should see a horizontal menu of _Solutions_ | _Products & Services_ | _Ordering_ | _Support_ | _Training & Events_ | _Partner Central_ . Click on | _Products & Services_ |.
    3. On the following webpage, under the section titled "Products" click on _Cisco IOS Software_.
    4. On the following webpage, on the right column that starts with the title "Let Us Help", there's a section below that titled "Related Tools." Click on _Software Center_.
    5. On the following webpage, under the title "Select a Software Product Category", click on _Switches Software_.
    6. On the following webpage, under the section titled "Existing User", type in your User Name and Password into their respective fields, then click the [Log In] button.
    7. On the following webpage, under the section titled "Select a Device", click the [+] to the left of the words "LAN Switches."
    8. After the tree expands, scroll down until you see the words "Cisco Catalyst 3500 XL Series Switches." Click the [+] to the left of those words.
    9. After the tree expands, click on _Cisco Catalyst 3548 XL Switch_.
    10. On the following webpage, under the section titled "Select a Software Type", click on _IOS Software_.
    11. On the following webpage, under the section titled "Select a Release", click on _12.0.5-WC17(ED)_.
    12. After you click on _12.0.5-WC17(ED)_, on the right of it, you should see a link for _C3500 IOS IMAGE_. Click on _C3500 IOS IMAGE_.
    13. On the following webpage, click the [DOWNLOAD] button.
    14. You need to carefully read the following webpage which is Software Download Rules that you need to either [Accept] or [Decline]. This is as far as I can lead you to obtain the latest IOS for your Cisco Catalyst 3548 XL Switch without commiting to the Software Download Rules myself.

    I hope this helps.
