Is it just me but when the festive holiday starts and everyone leaves the office at lunchtime because there is ‘nothing to do’ the IT guy is always still in the office until way past 5! This is because there has been a major network upgrade planned and it couldn’t be done at any other time because the users cannot go without their email etc. for a few hours.

3 clients I support have asked to get firewall upgrades or a different AV package deployed over the xmas holidays. My own personal favourite is a client who wants all the UPS devices on 5 servers changed with no downtime whatsoever?!? Answers on a postcard for that one please!

Anyways is anyone else going to working over the xmas period? :blink

I like my company's take on this. They declared a network freeze from this morning until after Christmas.

They realize that doing major work like this without adequate cover is a recipe for disaster, and instituted this policy about 4 years ago.

And if clients are being silly - charge them silly money.

    Harry.

typical really isnt it? your client has obviously heard of the battery within the machine, and so assumes that it can be disconnected from its power supply for a short time without going down.

Just the 4 day weekend for me over Christmas.

The other two lads in the team have kids so I let them have Christmas off.

It's the one nice thing I do a year! :biggrin

break up thursday back in on the 3rd of Jan. We have new servers to implement and a few teething problem with the citrix over eps9. Countless other stuff so they said don't do it over christmas, have a rest and make a start in January <<<aaaww how thoughtful. But wait! What they really mean is have a rest, you'll need it as we have a hell of a year planned for you next year and noone else has the slightest idea where to start! So in hindsight it might be better to just have a few days off cause then i know i could make a head start instead of hitting it running in Jan!<< heelllpppp

    Update:

After working late almost every night this week I will get Christmas off work after all, joy!

Managed to arrange a time for UPS upgrade in January with no downtime (cough cough!) and finished all the firewall\av updates this week. Has anyone ever uninstalled Norton AV from a Small Business Server? Took a few hours with about 10 reboots (the users were not happy!) but now NOD32 is on, looks like a good product so far.

Anyways time for a few beers! :biggrin
