:biggrin Nothing funny about it. You are most into Linux, certainly the biggest advocate of it on the forum. Why not have you demonstrate it to us? Perhaps showcase a few examples for backend server setups, since I Think thats where it would be most likey sold, but the front end stuff is quite good too.

Even a Q&A session for people wanting to do something specific in Linux that they cant get their head around. Personally Id like a talk on the file structure, since I just cant get my head around it whenever i look at linux.

    Fergal,

Actually the Linux file system is far more logical than Windows file system.

You have a /boot directory where the system boots from.
You have a /home directory where all user home directories, other than root's(/root is root's home directory in Debian systems), are found.
You also have a directory specifically dedicated to system-wide configuration files, /etc (at least in Debian all system-wide config files are found there).
You also have a /var directory where, in Debian, all files served by web or database servers are located, plus other things such as the process ID files for all daemons and where apt-get and Synaptic store the installed software database and archive all software packages installed using the Apt system.
You also have a /usr directory and in there is where almost all documentation for the system, and a lot of files for different applications that are shared between users, are to be found.
The / (root) directory is what is considered the top level directory. All other directories on the system are subdirectories of it.
/lib is where probably about 99% of the shared libraries are located, .dll files in Windows terms.
The /bin directory holds all the system utilities that a regular user account has access to. The /sbin directory holds the majority of the utilities that only root can access.

Those are the main ones to get your head around. Once you realize that there is a very logical order to it it's really easy to work with. You looking for a shared object or library file? Look in /lib first. You looking to find a configuration file? Look in /etc. Want to find a utility? Look in /bin or /sbin. Want documentation? Look in /usr/share/doc. None of Window's dumping of executables, configuration, documentation, and user files in the same directories.

Have to agree with Freddy here, the Nix file system is FAR more logical than windows
and it follows a more traditional mount system (not using silly drive letters, wheres the scalability in that?)

    /boot is a directory under / (root)
but /boot can be on a totally different drive/partition

the pictures explain it a bit better than I could
just thought I would show Freddy some support, and prove I'm not a total Microsoft loon :)

Wow, the world must be coming to an end now that Phoenix is admitting to not being a "total Microsoft loon"! :lolbang

Seriously, I think the fact that the *nix file system is so logical is one of the things Windows people struggle with. They just aren't prepared for a logical structure after seeing Window's mess for so long. I know I wasn't when I first started. Then once I started to see how easy it was to find things for any program, and how much better this system is for security purposes, it all started to click.

If you recall back to when you started here Freddy, you will remember I was heavy into Gentoo at the time

Like Zeb, I'm not swayed either one way or the other, I use the best tool for a job
I use Windows on the desktop, because I'm a gamer
OS X on my new Laptop, because I wanted an efficient performant platform that I didn't need to fiddle with much, bud had all the stuff I needed out of the box, including perfect WiFi support, great battery life and all my *nix networking tools!
I have Linux as an iSCSI target as its stable and free
but I use Windows as a NAS server as it ties in better with my AD, which agai

and I run whatever fits best on my servers
fits best for me, and my business

and when dealing with clients, the same holds true
sometimes that's Linux, some times its Solaris, other times its Windows

Technology and products are irrelevant, my job is to solve business problems with the right tool for the job, whatever that may be for each specific business, Windows, Linux, Unix, none of them are a panacea, and none of them do everything the best

Your are SO correct in that most windows admins have VERY little understanding of anything outside their little world, I think you will find a lot of the folks here are have a slightly different view, and its because of people like you, Zeb and myself who can tout the benefits of ALL technology, not just the flavour of the month :)

    Phoenix,

I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I wasn't laughing at you. I was laughing with with you, as I thought that's what your smilie indicated you were doing about your statement. I was just having a chuckle at you saying you weren't a "total Microsoft loon".

I know you have a lot of Linux experience, and so do quite a few other people here. A lot more than I do. I make no claims to be a Linux guru, just an open source and Linux advocate, who seems, as is my nature about all things I get enthusiastic about, to get a "bit" wound up about things. :D

I'm sure these days your skills surpass mine mate :)
I don't get to play on it as much as I used to, and my home systems are in that 'just works' state, so not much fiddling there either

don't worry about the loon bit, there was no offence taken, I'm a light hearted kind of guy at the worst of times and i know what you meant :P
