Just goes to show that there are even physicists who don't pay attention in class or just "don't get it". :dunce :sleeping:scratch :eh :helpread

I don't pretend to have covered any of this stuff when studying for my Physics minor. However, Stephen Hawking has said that these sort of collisions happen all the time in nature, and that if a small black hole were to develop, it would evaporate and vanish harmlessly. He's proven over the years to be quite knowledgeable about this sort of stuff, so I'm going to lay money that he's right and there's nothing to worry about.

Flick the switch and lets be done with it all lol, I watched a program from the BBC (think it was called End of Days or something to that effect) and they said there a tiny wee possiablity that it could make a Strangelet.

I like this quote from a news article:

    See!
Even the scientists studying the data won't go anywhere near the thing.

Oh well, if you're in Switzerland and you see all the chocolate starting to melt, run.

I think its pretty amazing. The LHC is huge, and all cooled to about 2 degrees kelvin. Its a wonder they ever got the funding to build it, I am pretty sure some amazing science will come from it.

The guy has less movement in his whole body than I have in my big toe but when it comes to science he's bigger than Einstein. I'd trust him over the crackpots any day.

Speaking of, has anyone read his (Hawking's, not Einstein's) most famous book, A Brief History of Time? Great stuff. Really (for the most part) brings what he's thinking down to the average Joe or Jane.

Didn't he say something along the lines of 'It's completely safe, but nobody knows what's going to happen...'

And what a shame England will get it before we do !! :biggrin Sob, sob .... Though we will not have time to wave our Braveheart flags in celebration as 1 nanosecond later we will be toast also ! :biggrin

Personally I believe the forces unleashed in such an experiment are incalculable. It could be dangerous - VERY dangerous.

Thanks for that Fergal - I think I learned a thing or two about particle Physics from that. Kind of reminds me of the "White and Nerdy" video by Weird Al Yankovic :-
