Right here is my problem. For some reason after having problems in the past with TalkTalk I decided to sign up to AOL broadband (same parent company) and get a free PS3. They messed up the initial order and ordered me a laptop instead and didn't take my MAC code properly as well. I rang back the same day to check as I thought the person on the other end of the phone messed it up when he asked for my name and address about 3-4 times. After the second time the person took my details again and said he would cancel the first order and put it through. I waited about 3 weeks and heard nothing apart from a welcome letter with a live date but receive no modem or user details etc. Near the live date I got a letter asking for a MAC code and I nearly blew a fuse. I rang them up to cancel and was persuaded to stay but was told they again messed up taking my MAC code and as it had expired I had to go through to sky to get another one.

After getting another MAC code I rang them up and gave them it and was told it would go live in about 2 weeks. The live date came and went and I had no modem so I rang and cancelled it and went with Tiscali (which I'm happy with) and thought nothing of it. 2 weeks after cancelling a parcel gets delivered and it's the bloody PS3. I couldn't believe it. As I had spent a small fortune ringing the idiots I decided to leave the PS3 packaged up and wait until they contacted me to collect it. About a month went by and I got a letter threatening debt collection agencies on me unless I return the PS3. I sent them an email which wasn't very nice telling them to f@ck off as they were in the wrong and to collect it. AOL arranged to collect the PS3 and they did. Now another month later I've gotten another bloody letter saying they want the PS3 back or they will pass my details onto a debt collection agency.

Is there anything I can do to take them to court for harassment or claim all my time and phone calls back off them as I'm sick of dealing with them and refuse to ring them and spend another penny on phone calls. Thank god I asked my wife to get a proof of collection when they picked it up.

They are the worst company I've ever dealt with as a whole and are driving me around the twist.

I'd speak to the Citizens Advice, to see if there is anything you can do... it's free as far as I am aware.

thats unfortunate, as far as I remember you can invoice them for the cost of the telephone calls you have made to them (think I saw it on watchdog or summint the other week). Giddy is right through contact CAB and maybe they will advise you to take it to the small claims court. only thing I would be worried about is if any of their mess ups would have put a black mark on your credit history.

Take everything you have, phone bills and all letters to CAB and see what they say

    Nice one giddy rep left!

Cheers guys for the replies. I was half expecting for a film crew to jump out and say it's been a big joke as it seems like it. I can't believe how stupid they are and I'm the idiot left with the stress and phone bills.

And once you're free of this mess, be sure to spread the word that AOL is evil. I daresay that I despise AOL's business practices as much as (or more than) Freddy despises Microsoft's.

they have just rang me to say they messed up and have the PS3. The bloke offered me £20 on my account and I spent 5 minutes telling him I didn't have an account. Then he offered me a £20 voucher to spend in their shops. I told him I'd rather stick pins in my eyes then go into another Carphonewarehouse shop so they are sending me a cheque to cover the cost of calls. Slight result but I've a mind to bill them for all the hours I've lost sorting this out.

At least you got a result!

    Now the questions are:
Will they actualy send the cheque?
Will they get all muddled and hassle you again?

maybe they will demand the cheque.

Perhaps that will teach you for using ao-hell. :biggrin

I long since decided I hated AOL. The only thing worthy on it is AIM, and you can get that for free. So I did. It probably wouldnt be quite so bad if they didnt insist on using their mail/internet monster to connect to the 'Always on' broadband (why do you have to connect if its always on???). Yeah you can minimise it and surf with whatever you want after doing so, but thats not the point, I dont want their hog using my system resources.

a tech using AOL is similar to a tech walking into PC World and asking for assistance
i mean seriously, AOL have been the laughing stock of ISPs since the old days of 28k modems :)

whats the worst part of that? walking into PC world, or doing so and asking for assistance?

Cause, I have to let you know that I have on occassion bought stuff from PC world - particularly if I need something sharpish.

Same here, if I'm in a rush for a part I will go into PC World.

I went in there today to have a look round and make a mental note of what I want in the future then purchase it online with a different vendor at a cheaper price :D

slypie, I would check your credit history too just to be on the safe side and make sure they did not send your name into them.

oh and take a picture of the check and letter that comes with it and burn it to a disk, just in case there is anymore backlash from this down the road. The check alone admits their guilt.

I asked if they used their crappy modified browser and loggon software and was told no. That's another thing they lied about then.

I know it looks bad but I was running out of options as sky and virgin were slow. Since having Tiscali though my connection has been excellent.
