Have just tried setting up a lab to test a possible office setup.
I have been trying to configure a Cisco 2600 with subinterfaces to connect to switch.

    What I have is:
    C2600 Software (C2600-I-M), Version 12.3(26), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

What I am trying to do is:

    Interface Ethernet 0/0.10
    ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
    encapsulation dot1q

    Interface Ethernet 0/0.20
    192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0
    encapsulation dot1q

    etc....

The Interface Ethernet 0/0 will be patched into a downstream Cisco 3960G with VLANs for each subinterface

My issues that when i try to configure an IP address it tells me:

% Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that
subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q,
    or ISL vLAN.

I look at the list of allowed commands on the interface and trunk encapsulation is not actually listed.

Do I need to buy an IPServices license for this to work?

I am actually planning on setting up a small office with a similar setup using a Cisco 1921 Integrated Services router. Will this work with 1921 IP Base?

Did you put this in before the config you listed

    Interface Ethernet 0/0
    no shut

    then the bit you listed

Oh sorry you should also set the dot1Q before the ip address on the sub interface.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yes I enabled Ethernet 0/0 before I tried to configure anything on the subinterfaces.
When I "?" for a list of commands, there is no "encapsultation" option there, nor is there any other command for anything similar.
I just logged onto a cisco 2811 and tried the same thing and had no issues. If i do a show ver this is what I have:
Cisco IOS Software, 2801 Software (C2801-SPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.4(24)T3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

On the 2600 if i do a show ver i get this:
    C2600 Software (C2600-I-M), Version 12.3(26), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

    Hey,
Thanks for the tip. I just found out that you cannot run 802.1Q without at least IP Plus...
I have already ordered a couple of 1921's with IP Base...
does this just mean that I need to purchase the license upgrade keys from Cisco?

According to the cisco feature navigator a 1921 with ios universal ip base will support ieee 802.1q vlan support & trunking.

Hi, i'm attempting to set up trunking 801Q on a 2621 router with software version 11.3 (2) XA4. Looks like this IOS does not support trunking according to the Cisco feature tool mentioned in an earlier post. How do I/or where can i download a newer IOS for my router to enable trunking it it's sub interfaces?
