    Hi,

Can anyone recommend some kind of VPN software for a very basic set-up?
I am frequently going over to my fathers to sort something out on his PC. While I don't mind going there sometimes it is something straight forward and would also benefit to be able to carry out maintenance remotely.

Why not just use MS Remote Desktop ? Even if your dad's PC is not XP, you can install the client on pretty much any version of Windows using the Remote Desktop Client

    Here's the Technical Bit

Thanks Gav. I wasn't aware that you can install RDP on home.

I was after something that I could basically "log in" to his computer whenever the need arises to perform any maintenance etc. Having said that I haven't looked into the full in's and out of RDP so maybe unlike RA where you have to ask for an invite I can log in when and where need be. :hug

we use a program called Radmin at work (like VNC but its encrypted and everything). not sure how it would work over the internet. you might still need a vpn set up to use it. but it allows you to log onto their system with full control (although unless you log them off, you only have their rights, and it takes over their session). its a good program.

Thanks. Just had a look at the Radmin link, looks good.
I think I will have a go with RDP first and go from there :tune

ofcourse without a true vpn your going to be opening up the system to a malicious user also wanting some 'remote access'
a true vpn allows the systems to act as if they were on the same LAN, thus the use of LAN protocols is ok, these systems are really not designed to be open facing on an external interface
