    System monitor utilities - to monitor if a system is healthy

    common reasons to upgrade - system running slowly need more ram.

    or are these too basic an answer?

    agree with GBL however, second question

    as the question refers to software, imo, the answer can vary to each individuals needs;
    work purposes
    likes to keep with the latest software for educational needs / fun
    buggynuss in software
    financial value, an upgrade may give you more value for money

    Hope this helps....
