Good Coverage of Basic C++ (Not read this, generally reccomended text for beginners.)
    http://www.amazon.com/Primer-Plus-5th-Stephen-Prata/dp/0672326973/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

Good Quick Intro to Modern C++ (I've read this, very slim book that covers the basic essentials only, very good quick intro.)
    http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Dep...=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221679351&sr=1-3

Box Set (Might be a cheaper way to try a bunch...)
    http://www.amazon.com/C-Depth-Boxed...r_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221679351&sr=1-11

The Classic Reference by the Creator of C++ (Some people find this a little dry, I read it 3 times while learning C++ so I guess it depends on the reader...)
    http://www.amazon.com/C-Programming-Language-Special-3rd/dp/0201700735/ref=pd_rhf_f_i_cs_4

Best STL Reference (Probably not for you yet!)
    http://www.amazon.com/C-Standard-Library-Tutorial-Reference/dp/0201379260/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

C++/OOP Intro (This guy taught me C++, might be worth picking up cheap second hand)
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Object-Orie...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221680976&sr=8-1

Some of these books are fairly old now, you can pick them up cheap if you are lucky, I updated my dog earred Stroustrup C++ Programming for only £10 at a discount bookseller...

Have a look around amazon and see which one you think suits you best...

cheers, mate! I'll be fully stress free when I know what I'm going back to on Friday. :biggrin

Now, this is actually a very big problem! The fact that you have no idea which book to get next actually demonstrates shakey knowledge in itself. What you need is a book that generally covers the language up to a point that will give you the foundation to understand more advanced topics. As I think I've pointed out many times before for beginner C++ programmers, I'd be inclined to go for the 'Teach Yourself' series for C++ - like this book which I would very highly recommend for the approach to learning that you clearly prefer. It's very well structured and actually guides you in telling you at precisely which point you have covered a topic to move on to the next. Sometimes books hit beginners with loads of text and examples that leads them to not being quite clear when one topic ends and the next begins.

    Get this book! :)

Good call! Make sure that at least the first couple of chapters are understandable. If they are not, it is unlikely that the book is right for you.

    Good luck! :biggrin

Take the leap of faith! I find it hard to believe that you would end up thinking you've wasted you money if you work through this book steadily from the very beginning. :biggrin
