For those of you who may be interested...

I've decided to start a blog.

I've always been against blogging in general principal: No-one is interested in what people have to say, unless they are doing important things (such as developing the next version of vb.net (for us code monkeys), or producing a hot new gadget). I'm not important, nor do I do important things in my life.

Anything of any import that I wish to share with people, I will generally share with those people interested, thus belying the need for a blog. I could spend hours, writing in detail about the minutae of my life - of what interesting things we got up to in the last Roleplaying session, or what cool new tech I played with today at work. But at the end of the day, few people (even among those I would call friends) are interested in those aspects of my life. And even then only one or two of those aspects.

I've always seen blogging as inconsequential people trying to big up themselves, and con themselves into believing that they are somebody. That the world cares about them. Most of the time they are just proving that they are illiterate.

Now though, I've decided to start a blog in relation to IT. Mainly software development to be honest, but I may include other stuff if the fancy takes me.

It's mainly going to be in relation to little development tidbits I come across. Little problems I find solutions for, or cool little techniques I come across.

If some people find what I post useful, so much the better. If not, then it will simply serve as a knowledge base for my own use. Either way I will get benefit from it.

Check it out if you fancy. If not, meh!

    cheers guys.

Mitz, just for you, I've re-enabled anonymous commenting. May be a bad idea in the long term though. I'll see how it goes.

    Ah a WordPress special!

I just had to implement this at work cos our MD thought having an internal blog would solve all the communication problems within the company!

I quite like the software, and although I had no php experience, I still managed to customise certain aspects of the site.

    Looking good so far :thumbleft

Yep. I spent most of last night wrestling with movabltype on the webserver, first via apt-get and then just downloading it myself. It was just one huge nightmare. I just couldnt get it to work (partly because it was cgi I think).

In the end, I decided to throw it in the bin, and found wordpress instead. Its php, which my server is already set up for, and to be honest - I think it looks very clean.

Cheers Mitz. Wonder how long it will take for the blog to start appearing on google...

I did register to comment on your blog, I think somehow I made a typo in my email address :D

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself in the last couple of lines of your entry, there will always be people out there who will find the blog interesting.

I have my own personal blog and I used to put similar lines in mine and then I stopped putting them in, let folks make their own minds up whether they find your blog interesting or not, don't make their minds up for them :D

Keep up the good work :D

mutter. WP uses the servers local mail function by default, and doesnt provide functionality to set it up for an smtp server.

Managed to find a plugin for it that allows you to set the smtp server settings. Once I got that in, it works fine.

yeah. I've got a machine here running Debian as a webserver. Allows me to play around with a variety of things.

Out of curiosity, how did you get the rss feed stuff at the top of the page on your blog?

I have a blog too which you can check out here, or in my sig by clicking the Wordpress logo. It's not been updated over the Christmas and New Year break due to time commitments and getting a new dog has taken up my time too! I'm back in the saddle now though so onwards and upwards to you all my fellow scribes!!

nice blog mate, I'm in the process of starting my own about debt management and debt law and advice, as well as out of the box thinking and ideas on remaining anonymous in the nanny state etcetera, alot on ID theft and how to avoid it, the state of britain etcetera, just general soap box discussions. Just in the process of proof reading several interviews I have done with some authors, journalists and businessmen on what they think of the UK and how it has changed recently (involving the financial mess we are in) as well as their opinions on various off hat subjects.

Maybe you could do some tutorials mate ? the basics kind of thing to get people into coding. there is a lack of high quality tutorials.
