    Hi forum,

I am currently a backup administrator (NetBackup, TSM, and ARCserve), but I would like to extend my opportunities by becoming a systems administrator. Do you guys have any advise to what path or road should I travel. I already have an MIS from college, but want to do this on my own, and by taking courses, etc.

    thanks.

    Hi Chinio

You sound like you're on the right path as you'll deal with server backups, sans, nas drives etc. You need to start looking at Microsoft certification, the Windows 7 exam for starters then progress into the server exams. Self study is how I've one the majority of mine and I found this to be fine and cost effective.

In the mean time approach your server team and ask if you an do a secondment or spend some time learning what they do.

Microsoft certification teaches you about the technology and how to support it. Not everything but it gives you a solid foundation you can supplement with your on the job experiences.

I know a few friends who made their way onto our server team by specialising in Citrix so you could check this out although I'd advise anyone to have Windows Server skills as their core skills in a server support team, unless of course if you're Unix support! ha ha

    Good luck
    James

Thanks, jk2447, yes, I work very closely with the Server teams (both Unix/Linux and Windows). So, you recommend to take the 70-680, before the 70-640?

That's the usual way of doing it. Especially if its your first Microsoft style exam, as it would give you a taster of what their style is like.
