Cloning machines, creating templates etc done yesterday. Added sysprep to vCenter so its all slick. I like the way I can create a template, convert it back to a VM, power it up, patch it, shut it down then turn it back into a template :)

My brain got a tiny bit fried today, not loads but a little. Today I learned about how VMware treats CPU's and Memory, and over committing them. Balooning a VMs memory etc. I learned some good practices like not keeping snapshots because the delta files will grow leaving the vmdk file read only and if you do delete the snap shot then theres potentially going to be a lot of IO merging this with the vmdk. We covered user permissions, created some alerts, set some reservations for disk and cpu, affinity and priority.

Created resource pools. I learned a good thing to note about resource pools. Lets say you have two resource pools. In one you have 5 VMs, in the other just one VM. If you give 2 thirds of the CPU to the first pool and the remaining third to the other pool, the pool with one VM will get the most priority! Because resource pools don't act like folders, they're different. The 2 thirds will have to be shared across the 5 VMs meaning the single VM in the resource pool with 1 VM will get a third of the CPU to itself!

I will do a little write up on what I've covered over the weekend but for now I'm just rambling things I can remember, its all becoming a bit of a blur although not a difficult course to get your head around tbh

Your lucky, I'm going to have to save up for the course for myself someday since I never seem to get a job where the company is willing to invest in training for their employees (they all think that you will take the training and go for a better paying job, of course if they paid competitively and make it worth staying with the company people won't want to jump jobs); I just learned yesterday that you can install vSphere/ESXi as a virtual machine in VMWare Workstation so I'm going to be studying for this exam sometime in the future.

Last time I looked Workstation didn't allow vSphere/ESXi to install as a VM and since I couldn't afford hardware at the time so I stopped looking but I'm gathering your "ramblings" and adding them to my Evernote program for later review, looking forward to your write up :)

Workstation is now a supported platform for installing vSphere.

I would also have a look into the VMware Academy program, that's how I did my ICM course and it cost me considerably less than it would have if I went through a normal training provider, another bonus for me at the time was that my course was being run over three consecutive weekends rather than week days (I was a contractor when I booked the course, now a permie).

VMware Player is free and then download the evaluations to get 60 days of fun. That's what I'll be doing this weekend. I was going to trash my 2003/2008 lab (dont pick on me I was doing the Hyper-v exam!) but I'll just put Player on top of 2008 at the weekend.

Give GK a ring mate, see what they say.
