I am sole I.T. 'tech' for two schools part time. I am on £8.21 an hour, which rises obviously as time progresses.

Currently works out at about £500 a month doing 16 hours a week. Don't forget I also get 13 weeks holiday and bank holidays on top of that. Kind of works out pretty good I would say. Works out at about 15,000 full time.

Last year in my placement year as an I.T. Assistant I was 13,000 before tax.

One of the problems of IT is that even though IT is a "new" profession - it's not really a profession as it's not regulated like lawers, teachers, doctors, nurses, etc (that's where the work that the BCS and other professional associations come in).

These are real ads* advertised in the papers and on the web:

    IT Assistant: £10k
    Graduate Support Analyst: £14k
Trainee Support Analyst: meets minimum wage
    IT/Commercial Graduate: £15k

As you can see, what is actually advertised and what is actually available are two different figures.

I work for a large school, I started on 15.5k as a senior IT tech (I believe the normal tech salary would be around £14.5k 3 years ago at my school), but of course my salary went up as my responsiblities went up and went up when I got promoted to IT Manager. My salary is still low compared to as a Senior Tech in the private, but there are other perks - only 5 mins from home, GP & dentist are just 3 mins away from work, etc. I do work 52 weeks a year with just 4 weeks hols, but it could be worse :)
