I am trying to add a section of numbers up to then take the answer away from a number (which is an absolute cell reference) and so have been trying formulas similar to the following only to keep getting #VALUE! come up

    =SUM($G$5-(H9:J9))

I'm sure that the answer to this one is simple but I've been staring at it for so long now that I can't do it!

    Help!

I would have thought =SUM(H9:J9)-$G$5 would be better.

No because that does the answer take the original figure and I need to do the figure minus the answer!

    EG I need to do 24 ($G$5) - 2+7+8 (H9:J9) so it should equal 7 - the suggestion given gives me -7.

Sorry read the question wrong  . Try =$G$5-SUM(H9:J9)
