Hi all

Has anyone seen that Louis Theroux documentary about the Westboro Baptist Church, known as America's most hated family?

I know it's been aired before, but I only saw it for the first time the other night when it was repeated. Sweet Lord, I don't think I've ever seen such a bunch of obnoxious, offensive nutters in my life! I'm all for freedom of speech, but what these idiots do is just plain offensive.

Among many other thingss, they do things like picket funerals of servicemen killed in Iraq, they've picketed funerals of kids killed in high-school shootings, and they say this is all the Lord's punishment for a tolerant nature towards homosexuality.

Bonkers.

Has any forum members from the States ever come into contact with this lot? I know it's a long shot, but I was in the pub on Monday after work and a guy overheard my conversation about them and said he was working in America and the college he was at got picketed by these nutjobs.

I saw this the first time around, some vile people, there views dont really belong in the 21st century (or any for that matter).

Not wanting to spark a riot here but just goes to show that most religions can be turned into something nasty through peoples interpretation.

 

Nothing controversial there mate, you are absolutely right, people do interpret a religious belief in their own way and can make it a very nasty piece of work. This one has been denounced by virtually every offical entity in Christianity anyhow, so far as I know.

 

I saw Louis Thereoux's programme on them and Keith Allen's as well, They're a disgrace quite frankley. They just enjoy the limelight and the trouble they cause, the more the media throw publicity at them the more they play up to the cameras. They're no different to the nutters in any other faith, its not the religion, its the power they get from it. I have tended to find with all the religions I have come in contact with, the more devout the person, the less they push their faith on you.

Keith Allen found out one of the kids in the family was born out of wedlock, that soon shut the mother up!!!

 

Oh right, I never knew Keith Allen did something on them too. I know Michael Moore spent some time winding up the founder by following him around in the 'Sodomobile'.

Personally, I find it really offensvie when people try and force their religious views on someone. Preach, by all means, and if people choose to listen they will, but this kind of malarky is nuts, especially the slogans and tactics they use. I'm surprised more of them haven't had seven shades knocked out of them

 

This particular church gives Christians and all people of faith a bad name. They do *not* glorify the name of God.

That was the worst aspect of the programme, the kids they were brainwashing. At some points, they had kids holding up really offensive placards, and when asked what they meant, the kids had no idea, and at one point, one of the children got hit by a drinks carton thrown from a moving car. Pretty sad stuff

 

That is not a church it is a cult. They just hide behind the word church to spread their hate. They have been sued and lost. For such a thing to happen, well that must mean God is mad at them.
