Thought I would share this as I haven't seen anything about it here.

I am a student member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and this is a great resource for tech professionals and students. Next year I will probably go ahead and upgrade my account to a full professional membership.

There are local chapters worldwide though it looks like the only professional chapter in the UK is in Manchester and their is a student chapter in Bristol but you don't have to join a local chapter.

This is primarily a US based organization but I am assuming the perks that come with membership are the same regardless of where you are... I know most of the posters here are in the UK but there are some of us here in the USA and around the world.

If you are a member of the BCS then you get a discount membership.

    Among the benefits of membership:

    # Full access to 600 online books from Safari® Books Online, featuring leading publishers including O'Reilly. Available to ACM Professional Members. http://pd.acm.org

    # Full access to 500 online books from Books24x7®. Available to all ACM Professional and Student Members. http://pd.acm.org

    # Full access to over 3,500 online courses in multiple languages and 1,100+ virtual labs. Available to all ACM Professional and Student Members from Element K®. http://pd.acm.org

I've gone through a number of the CCENT/CCNA labs and you complete them on actual equipment. As a student member you get your money's worth pretty easily with access to the books and element k courses and labs.

    Cool :)

I've been a member myself of the CSTA part of the ACM since 2007, however haven't really looked into it a great deal as my two main associations are the BCS and the ILM.

I'm sure others will find your review of their benefits useful 8)
